I've been sitting next to a bon fire and caught a face full of smoke from a wind blow. I couldn't imagine being surrounded by it.

Besides lack of oxygen, when a house is on fire there are toxic gasses released by the burning of plastics and other materials which will kill you.
But the simple answer is yes, smoke inhalation kills most people before the fire does.

I read a book about smoke jumpers and it said most died due to oxygen deprivation / toxic gases prior to being burned in the fire.

Smoke inhalation , they would feel no pain, just pass out due to low oxygen

This is wrong. Yes, the body's breathing impulses are based on CO2 levels in the blood, but oxygen deficiency is what kills. It is not excess CO2. Death from asphyxiation by an inert gas (nitrogen, argon, etc) is due to insufficient oxygen and not excess CO2.

My assumption would be that lack of oxygen would cause you to pass out, then it would depend on if your brain went without oxygen for an extended period of time or if your body/organs were damaged by the fire before your brain was dead

People die from the fire but might be luckily passed out from smoke beforehand

Smoke they try to fight & decide to go hunker down & then they get very sleepy take a nap to bed & never wake up .

That's what I would think.
We do know that choking to death in smoke is bad enough that it caused many people to jump out of a window 100 stories high on 9/11.
