Yeah, between Bobby and Casey Jones I'm steering clear of 'em.

My grandpa was seriously into it. Like SERIOUSLY.
I’ve kind of promised myself to one day build one in his honor/memory. I’m sure I’ll have a flood of emotions and memories when I do it.

Not me, but the director I used to report to was deep into it. It's astounding how much money you can dump into that shite. He easily had 10 or 20 thousand tied up in his basement.

Hey. Whoa. Whoa. I got all these trains. I can’t carry ’em. See, my old man gave them to me when I was a weird little tyke. I never used trains. I don’t like trains. I like cars, fast cars and fast women.

Visited the model train setup at McWane in Birmingham this weekend. Those guys are all in.

Afterwards, in seeing how much my kids were fascinated, my father gave me an decent HO scale beginner train set my nephew never got into.

Im going to buy some expansion tracks and set it up around our tree for our kids to play with.

I can’t look at a pic like that anymore without immediately thinking of the Craigslist guy who wanted someone to join him in stomping and kicking over his trains.

Interesting what our grandfathers were into. Mine was into stamps. I have his collection and haven’t done anything with it yet. Too emotional.

My Grandpa had a large train table. I just have a decent Lionel Christmas set. My cat steals the trees every year.

Probably alot more than that, bub. I've seen individual engines for $3-5k and other train cars for $800 or more at the local craft toy store here. Do the math starting there.

$2,000 Southern Pacific Engine at Walmart

When I was in real estate, I had a client that was referred to me that was into it. He told me he and his wife needed a bigger house because of his train set. They had a 3 bedroom house that they converted to a one bedroom house and a train room. That wasn't big enough. They bought a larger house and converted about 600 sq.ft. into it. In talking he told me he had his collection insured for 200k. He would travel the country doing these train conventions. I didn't get to see the new setup, but his old setup was amazing.

I've heard and seen some extravagant setups in this hobby, but I just for the life of me don't understand what the collector/builder gets out of it. Kinda like the train watchers - dudes video trains going through intersections. Why? Who the hell cares what train rolls through town?
