Mississippi's five largest hospitals had no Intensive Care Unit beds available for patients as of Wednesday because of a surge in coronavirus cases, officials reported Thursday. An additional four hospitals had five percent or less available.

“I was woken up by a phone call yesterday morning at 4 a.m. because we had so many patients at our hospital, we didn’t know where to put them,” Vice Chancellor of the University of Mississippi Medical Center Alan Jones said Thursday.

This shortage has impacted facilities’ ability to not only care for patients with the virus but other emergency patients as well. The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is the only hospital in the state that cares for major trauma victims and transplant patients, for example. UMMC emergency care doctor, Ustav Nandi, said the hospital is no longer able to accept transfers of patients from other hospitals who are suffering from ailments such as strokes or heart attacks.

quote:

“We are gravely concerned," Nandi said. "While I know COVID-19 is on the forefront of everyone’s minds right now, other diseases have not taken a backseat during this pandemic. We want to be there so that we can take care of our patients when they come in for emergencies: heart attacks, strokes, sepsis, trauma, other infections.”

Dobbs said facilities have begun sending patients out of state for care.

Not good. Certainly not surprising though with the way numbers are rising across the south

Wow. That sounds really, really scary. Let's see...

Oh, here is a quote from a doctor and CEO of Houston Methodist Medical Center (part of Texas Medical Center) in Houston that may shed some light on the situation:

quote:

Dr. Marc Boom with Houston Methodist: “What you’ve been hearing is a report that we are at 97 percent or so capacity across the Texas medical center. At Houston Methodist, we’re somewhere in the low 90s right now in terms of capacity of ICU beds, but let me put that in perspective … June 25 2019, exactly one year ago … It was at 95 percent. We are highly experienced at utilizing our ICU beds for the sickest of the sick patients day in day out … and it is completely normal for us to have ICU capacities that run in the 80s and 90s. That’s how all of us operate hospitals, and how all hospitals operate.”

Appropriately named Dr. BOOM. Another piece of wisdom from Dr. Boom - Settle Down...

On June 15, the Mississippi Department of Health was reporting 467 patients hospitalized for the coronavirus. Just a few weeks later, on Thursday the state reported 686 confirmed coronavirus patients were hospitalized and 255 suspected coronavirus patients.

How many ICU beds do they have?

Almost sounds like they have a lack of resources & should have been better prepared

New Orleans should have available beds at the convention center.

So how many covid patients are taking up ICU? My bet is all these elective surgeries they put off 4 months ago have turned into now surgeries.

Out of ICU beds being used for COVID-19 patients
OR ‘at capacity’ because they are still performing elective surgeries?

What were the hospitals doing while we were flattening the curve? Did they not prepare and learn?

In much the same way hotels and apartments operate. You’re only making money when occupancy is in the 90’s. Nobody makes money when occupancy is low.
