GONZALES, LA (WAFB) – The catamaran belonging to a Louisiana woman and her husband who have been missing since Hurricane Maria swept across St. Croix has been found near Puerto Rico, a relative said Friday. The couple remains missing.

The catamaran’s dinghy was not attached, giving renewed hope to the family that their missing loved ones somehow made it to safety.

Jennifer Stephens Robinson, of Gonzales, and her husband, Scott Hansen, were last heard from on September 19 as they called relatives to say they had boarded their catamaran and were leaving St. Croix to escape the path of the hurricane.

Friday, the family got word that the U.S. Navy spotted the catamaran on September 22 adrift on the south end of Puerto Rico. The catamaran is named The Briseis.

“With the news of the Briesis boat found by the Navy with the dinghy not attached to the boat, we are encouraged that Scott and Jennifer are possibly in a situation that they simply cannot get in contact with us,” Jennifer’s sister, Ellen Elias, said Friday. “Our hope now is that someone on land will see them and connect us to them.”

Given what we have learned about PR in the past few days this could be a possibility. They abandoned ship and made it to the island but have had no way of communicating with the US.

Hope there is a happy ending to this story.

When I saw that thread, I felt bad for the guy. I feared the worst. I know a lot of sailors. Monohull guys have a saying.

"The natural place a catamaran wants to be, is upside down."

And thinking about the physics behind a sailing catamaran, it makes sense. And makes a negative outlooks pretty easy.

I'm thrilled to see this post. Puerto Rico has more hurricane safe shelters than most Caribbean islands. But it got fricked up, and are still fricked up. I'm not surprised it took this long to final be able to communicate off the island.

You don't get happy ending on the OT.

Sounds like they should have stayed in the catamaran

Wouldn't it make sense for these people to have an EPIRD or satellite tracking device of some kind? I wouldn't be offshore hanging out in a boat for extended periods of time without one

I don't understand the mindset of getting in a sailboat trying to get away from a hurricane of epic proportions.
I hope they are found fine and healthy. But they made a damn stupid decision.

Yes, the boat was found abandoned and capsized on Friday, Sept 22. They were last heard from Tuesday afternoon September 19. The storm hit Wednesday morning. The phone pinged in southeast PR on Tuesday night. Hopefully they escaped in the dinghy, but I don't know what they could do in a 10' dinghy.

So they were looking at a huge, mountainous island full of people, but chose to take on a massive hurricane in a 30ft boat instead?

I mean, dude.....

What? They were headed to North of St John USVI in a 48' catamaran to get out of Maria's course.

If I were searching for them I would look in Haiti, PR, and the DR.

And to their credit, most large ships (The US Navy) go to sea before hurricanes to avoid them. This boat is their home, correct?

It was capsized, I presume Navy divers or CG dived and saw the dinghy missing and confirmed it did not detach and float down?
