Anyone know if there are any ways to resolve/and or pay a fine for a M.I.P. in Baton Rouge? I have a cousin who is a sophomore and got one this past weekend. He is being told you are required to complete a court ordered diversion program which caries a cost of around 500 bucks. Is this the only way resolve the M.I.P.? Seems like a pretty high cost for such a minor infraction and is nothing more than a money grab.

Yeah man, it's a complete money grab. My buddy got about 5 of them, judge started knowing him on a first name basis. He had to do the diversion course every time and community service.

pre-trial diversion program is the only way to go. it comes off your record if you are able/offered to do this

fine is much cheaper than the pre-trial program. fairly sure the 500 bucks (thinks it's more than that) is for the pre-trial.

depends if he wants it on his record or not.

I'm long past the age of getting a MIP. But good try.

500 bucks

I got one 4 years ago in Birmingham and it was ~$100 and 20 hours of community service.

it's not that hard freshman year on campus and around tiger land.. But one was for throwing up outside of Tland. Didn't even have anything on him, pretty excessive IMO

It's a money grab, just like pretty much every alcohol related law. Just tell him to pay the fine and do the diversion program. Make sure he knows alcohol shows up on piss tests too.

I did pre-trial for the two MIPs I got in college and had them expunged. In retrospect I wish I would have figured out how much the actual fine itself costs in relation to the pre-trial program, which is not cheap. No future employer/post-grad school will really care about you getting popped for having a sip of alcohol as long you're forthright about it.

Don't do pre trial for an mip, that's retarded. Save it for a dui.

It's only around $100 plus court fees if he just pays the fine. I got one a few moons ago around Tland and did the diversion program. I wasted my money should have paid the fine and gone on about my day

He needs to sack up and pay the $500. It is a money grab, but it is what it is. He just needs to learn to be more careful.
