Military people, why are we still deploying national guard units to Afghanistan?

I just read about a local National Guard unit that is being deployed to Afghanistan.
With such a low total troop commitment over there right now, why isn't the active Army handling this 100%?
Seems like a waste.

Let there be no doubt, common sense is not common in wartime.
On other hand reg army dont want three tours in 8 years. Draft is answer to endless war vs islam.

Because all units, at some point, take a turn and get in the fight.

We will never completely leave, same with Iraq. We built the largest embassy is the world in Baghdad capable of housing 5,500 troops, 104 acres.

I don't buy that with the National Guard. Active and Reserves, sure. But, if the government feels the need to deploy a National Guard unit overseas to an area with a current troop commitment of less than 10,000, then I find that to be a questionable use of resources.

That seems like a bit much.

Better question: why are we being asked to donate toiletries? Shouldn't the military provide those?

Because Afghanistan is home to one of the worlds largest deposits of Lithium. That's why we aren't at war with North Korea, we have enough rice.

To protect the poppy crop. Military Industrial complex needs the money.

The people who can answer this question won't because of OPSEC. Any other answer with detailed information is hopefully false.

BLUF: The Army is going through a phase where they are experimenting with NG and Reserve units being on equal footing with Active. See the recent realignment with 10th mountain and Texas NG and 173rd ABN. Government believes it makes the Army more well-rounded.
My opinion: It's stupid as frick and wasteful.

Everyone has to do their part in the military-industrial complex. How else will those who profiteer from war turn a profit?

That sounds idiotic.
Isn't the National Guard basically a state militia full of guys with full-time careers outside the military? Why would they want to put these guys on an equal footing as an active duty soldier?

Deployments are about to increase. Not just in the ME.
So, to answer your question logically, there are not enough troops to go around so the Guard fills the gap.

To guarantee that the troops have soft 2-ply TP instead of that cheap crap the government buys.

well national guard units are combat arms
not all units in active duty are combat arms
there are some really good national guard units that can effectively get the job done.

At last count, we have more than 650 military bases around the world. Staffing those with an average of 500 troops puts the number up to 325,000.

most Army reserve units are not combat arms, so there probably isnt a need to bring a whole brigade or battalion to Afghanistan.

The good old Army National Guard. I'll never forget when they arrived at FOB Lightning, went on a mission, and called for fire on themselves on accident. Troop movements in the theater were shut down for a week while everyone had to do remedial training and have a fire control officer on every convoy. What a shite show they were.
