I don't know about Ft. Leavenworth, but living in KC, especially if you are younger, won't be bad at all. I'm from Wichita, but have a lot of buddies post college who live there and love it.
Plenty of nice suburbs around the metro area to live in. Overland Park, Shawnee, Mission Hills, Lenexa, Leawood, Olathe, etc. I really like the OP area. Very good cost of living and lots going on. Good public schools if you have kids.
As far as what to do in KC, there are lots of choices between The Plaza, Westport, Power & Light, Brookside, etc. Really depends on how old you are and what you are looking to do. Also within 1 hour of some good publicly managed hunting areas for if that's your thing. Royals games area a lot of fun and they had one of the highest attendance in the MLB all season with the recent success. Chiefs games are fun to go drink at and party. They are known for being rowdy and having good tailgates., but once the game is played though they are a lot like Arkansas fans, not sure what success is or how to handle it. You're also close to Lawrence which is as great of a college town as there is. Worth trying to watch a game in Allen Fieldhouse during your time here.
Wish I had more information, just not as familiar with that area as some.
