It's so hard to figure out whether someone is mentally ill or just cursed with bad behavior. Of course the physicians will say it's brain chemistry but if our chemistry was the same we would go through life all acting/reacting identically. How do they go about setting the baselines for "normal"? I'm associated with a person I think is just a total fricking a-hole who can be nice at times. Others claim he is bipolar. He loves his pills and vodka, that's a fact. Funny thing, his kid displays the same personality traits.

Why must we continue to come up with scientific terms for "bad parenting?"

Sounds like a shitty person. A person a doctor would say is bipolar.

I would "associate" with this person as little as possible.

I'm almost convinced that the majority of these diagnoses are made based off of the respective doctor's conclusion of whether or not he/she thinks the patient's parents are willing to pay large sums of money for FDA-approved pharmaceuticals.

I "acted out" as a kid, between the ages of six to eight, and a school counselor recommended to my parents that I be immediately prescribed Ritalin. My parents basically told the counselor to go frick herself, and somehow I've managed to become a relatively productive adult without the aid of prescription drugs.

Considering that neurological sciences and psychiatry are relatively knew scientific fields, there still remains a great deal of information to be discovered in regards to psychological behavior.

There are people that certainly do possess mental illnesses or ailments, but I think it's quite apparent that many of these cases are grossly overdiagnosed.

It sounds like those who claim he is bipolar don't have a clue what being bipolar really is

Your friend is just an a-hole which may be the result of some kind of addiction.

I wonder this all the time. I have a friend who is diagnosed as bipolar. And I think to myself, ok being bipolar, thats some sort of imbalance. He take pills to treat it and then he becomes "normal". But what if everyone was bipolar and that was "normal". Why does he have to have something considered an imbalance? Its not like people are black and white. Its all grayscale. I agree with you about the chemistry thing and everyone acting the same. Idk. And then as I think about this i also go into considering stuff like alternative sexualities and stuff and it just seems too complex. Like being homosexual isnt "normal" but it is accepted now. I then compare and contrast the idea of someone being bipolar vs homosexual and the way they are perceived in society. If there was a drug to make someone homosexual, heterosexual, would we then prescribe it to people? Would that be the "normal" thing to do in society?

Should we feed everyone pills to make all of our chemicals the same so we can all be normal?

Idk man, idk. I just have to say frick this world and love everyone unconditionally.

What makes him an a-hole? Does he go out of his way to screw people over or does he just not kiss your arse?

He goes off whenever his arse is not kissed. Everything is good as long as he never gets citicism or has to explain himself. Once he goes off the cliff it can be days or weeks before he gets over the situation. Any stress in his life causes misery for those around him to the point that he is almost completely isolated because no on is willing to walk the tightrope required to be close to him

I had a good friend in Tulsa that was a wild child as an adult. One week he'd be like "drinks are on me, let's PARTY", the next week he'd be throwing rocks and screaming at others to go away (he never once went psychotic towards me in the decade we hung out). Once he got popped for DUI w/possession of cocaine and had mandatory assessment, was diagnosed Bi-polar he confessed to me he always knew something was "not right".

As far as ADHD and ADD, I knew 1, yes one, in living through public schools in the 1970's in 6 states who was truly ADD. So either something like contrails or aliens or GMO's must be the answer as parents, why, they just know their special snowflakes are like they are chemically not through bad parenting.

A lot of true bi-polar and hyperactives self medicate as, like my friend, they know something is "off". That is a sign for the uneducated among us, heavy drug/alcohol/sex use/abuse is a cover for some disorders. A 2nd cousin used to crank up the tunes to drown out the voices in his head telling him to kill every woman that entered his field of vision (before those Amazon's could get him, self defense ya see).

Sounds like a co-occurring diagnosis. Personality disorder and substance abuse. This is very hard to treat. This substance abuse must first be addressed to properly assess for needed mental health medications.

Generally speaking, a behavioral disorder can be treated with meds while a personality disorder requires lots of couch time with a professional.

Most of these "disorders" operate within a spectrum. Some barely perceptible from "normal" folks. Doctors cant force someone to take medication. They recommends it based off of issues people bring to the doctor. The physician therefore suggests a possible treatment consistent with his background in biology and biochemistry. Seriously, why do people care so much about what other people might be taking if it helps them lead more productive and happy lives. Its their money and they get to spend it the way they want.
