And then Texas wound up winning the project?

I think that was the first time I felt like a loser because I lived in Louisiana. The local news stations pumped the story up for weeks during the early '90s. I didn't even know what it was, but thanks to John Mahaffey, I knew it was big.

I guess the silver lining is that Texas wound up squandering hundreds of millions of dollars for a project that ultimately got scrapped.

Doesn't Louisiana have something that recently made news? One of only two in the US or the world?

LIGO - The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory - I've been there a number of times and worked with a couple of LSU professors who do work/research out there.

IIRC there are only two in the US and only one more outside the US which is located in Australia.

While were bragging:
- the largest climate controlled manufacturing floor space in the country is in New Orleans
- the largest freestanding geodesic structure is in Louisiana
- the farthest inland panamax port in the Americas is Baton Rouge
- the largest producer of those cardboard tubes in the center of toilet paper is in Baton Rouge
- the most powerful water pumps in the world are in New Orleans
- the first inmate executed by electrocution was in Louisiana (side note: he had to be electrocuted twice... )
