Curtin was convicted in 2021 of raping the adult woman with Perkins’ involvement and was sentenced to life behind bars by Livingston Parish Judge Brian Abels in March 2022. Following her conviction, numerous questions arose about the exclusion of crucial evidence during the trial. One pivotal piece of evidence highlighted that the woman allegedly raped that night had previously engaged in group sex acts, a fact in contrast to her testimony.

“Melanie Curtin is a free woman” after the Louisiana Supreme Court denied an appeal by the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office requesting to overturn the First Circuit Court of Appeal’s decision in her case.

It comes after the Appeal’s Court ruled in Oct. 2023 that Melanie Curtin’s aggravated rape conviction would not stand. The Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, who prosecuted the case, appealed the First Circuit’s ruling to a higher court, the Supreme Court. On April 23, 2024, the Louisiana Supreme denied the Attorney General’s request. They did not provide any reasons why the request was denied.

I’d bet the carpet doesn’t match… the Curtin.

Sounded better in my head.

I knew her years ago when she was a realtor- I guess that doesn’t matter. But I always thought she was a quality person. Good for her.

How did she get life in prison for that to begin with?

How did Perkins ever convince anyone to go along and participate with his nasty sexual desires? How did he get multiple women to participate in such gross acts like the tainted cupcakes, group sex acts, or the abuse of kids?

The above seems like a thing that should have been addressed in court, especially after the person lied in their testimony.

I can only assume Curtin has some sexual deviant desires in her since she was involved with Perkins. But, I bet this women regrets the decision to get in bed with Perkins and whoever or whatever else was in bed with them also.

Because multiple participants in a rape is by statutory definition First Degree Rape (used to be Aggravated Rape), and the sentence for First Degree Rape is mandatory life without the opportunity for parole.

"Carpet doesn't match"? Eyebrows never lie. No one colors those.

Not necessarily. Her conviction was overturned. The case is now going to be back in a pretrial posture. There is no jeopardy attached. It's as though the first trial never happened.

Mandatory minimum after refusing a much lesser deal. She rolled the dice at the time and lost.

So back to prison, most likely?

That's a more interesting question. I'm sure the AG is going to request that her original bond be reinstated, whatever that was, or to returning her to being held without bond if that was the status quo before. Whoever her attorney is will argue that she's had no issues staying out of trouble while the appeal has been pending, so if a new bond needs to be set, it should be set at an amount she can afford. What that might be, I have no idea, and what the judge will actually do, I further have no idea.

All points to watch.

Nah...probably the worst she will do is a plea deal for time served on a lesser charge.
