New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is leaving tonight for a eight-day visit to the African country of Ghana. She's a guest speaker for the inaugural Essence Full Circle Festival, which marks 400 years since the first slave ships left Ghana to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
The mayor's itinerary includes forging a sister city agreement with the city of Cape Coast, Ghana, which she first visited as a City Council member in 2012. Cantrell is also scheduled to visit a local hospital and nursing school before returning to New Orleans on Jan. 4, 2020.

Joining Cantrell on the trip are Rosine Pema Sanga, the city’s director of international relations, and Alana Harris, deputy director in the Office of Cultural Economy.
The mayor’s office says Essence is covering travel costs for Cantrell and Harris for flights between New York City and Ghana, as well as overnight lodging for the mayor and her two staffers. The city is paying for Pema Sanga’s airfare, which is $3,261.65.
quote:
The other exceptions are the night Cantrell will stay in Cape Coast, when the city will pay $300 for three hotel rooms, and airfare for Cantrell and Harris from New Orleans to New York, totaling $1,042.20, which is also on the public’s dime.

So the taxpayers of New Orleans are paying for the mayor and our Entourage have a vacation that is veiled as a humanitarian visit. Got it.
I'm sure the team will learn a lot about how to run a proper sewer and water district while they are there, as well.

$1000 round trip ticket to NYC. I usually pay around $125.
Mayor should fly coach.

Nola continues to be run into the ground by local leaders. Wtf are these government positions? Why are we spending money to vacation to Africa (who even does that) when the city infrastructure is falling apart?

We don’t need Ghana as a fricking sister city and what the frick is she going to benefit for the city by visiting a hospital and nursing home?
When was the last time she visited a hospital in New Orleans?

Who approves these stupid trips? A pre-approved budget? City Council?

Lol dumb white liberals in NOLA condone this and she’s just rubbing it in their faces

Do they even need to be approved?
Unless the city council is approving these trips but you never hear about them until the day before they leave.

Gonna bring the “essence” of Ghana back to NOLA? Can’t wait!

Spending north of $20K for an overseas trip should need to be approved by the city for merit, imho

That’s a good question. I’m going to email my councilman and ask. I’ll let you know his response

She is a keynote speaker, she will make La proud

Would a white mayor be taking this same trip?

She needs to leave before the New Year's Eve shootings. It is safer in Ghana then New Orleans
