Mayor LaToya Cantrell posted a warning Tuesday (Feb. 26) on Twitter, saying that viewing ladders will be “destroyed” along parade routes if they are placed illegally. City code forbids putting ladders along the roadside earlier than 24 hours before a parade rolls, and they must be at least 6 feet from the curb.

Reports on social media indicated city workers were collecting ladders Tuesday afternoon along St. Charles Avenue. A subsequent drive along the Uptown route from Napoleon Avenue to Lee Circle found the stretch was ladder-free.

I know this thread will end up with tons of comments like "ladders = statues", "why aren't they this tough on crime", "ladders block bullets", "use ladders to fill potholes" and any number of comments tying this to sewerage and water board.

But this ladders for days stuff is out of control. This might be the only thing, out of 100, that the mayor has gotten correct, but good for her.

That is a good question.

Have you ever seen someone you would want to associate with use one of those ladders for beads?

The people using them are usually more annoying than the ladders.

Throw catching is serious business for them.

There's been a couple things she's done that I surprisingly supported

Still quite wary of her though

Her Tweet is contradictory

Reminder: Ladders should not be left on the neutral ground or sidewalks overnight.

If its a 24 hour rule, it seems overnight is ok

Was in a parade last weekend. Purposefully did not throw to anyone with a ladder. That shite is annoying.

Yeah I'd imagine the latter is meant to pertain to having it out uptown Friday night in prep for Bacchus.

So you purposefully didnt throw to the youngest kids on the route?

90% of the ladders I see are young kids set back off the front lines.

As a kid, I remember riding on Mardi Gras day in a truck parade, and seeing two ladders with a box built across where three boys were sitting. Archie Manning was on top of one ladder, Olivia on the other, their three boys were in the box.

I hate the ladders but probably for different reasons than you—3 years ago Magazine st was a great place to enjoy Mardi Gras with the family. Now it’s being taken over by Ronnie and Candy’s of the world who are avoiding St. Charles due to ladders.

Hopefully she does something about the "homesteaders" on Orleans Avenue......those people are obnoxious.

While my opinion is not fully formed on her, when there is a big incident like the shooting downtown a few weeks ago or the thing in the quarter the other night she does show up to support the police. NOLA is a tough place when it comes to crime.

On the Uptown route, after tonight, there will always be a parade "within 24 hours" until Tuesday.

So at noon today, it's more than 24 hours until the first parade tomorrow evening, so they can clear the route.

But after tonight, the ladders can probably stay non-stop until Tuesday afternoon, and not break the law.

Endymion route is a different story.

Where are all of y'all standing where ladders are this much of an issue?

I stand on Napolean usually and ladders are set in tjhe middle of the neutral ground well out of the way

I have no problem with ladders 6-8 feet back that show up a few hours before a parade, provided there are kids in them.

Ladders used simply to hog up space before a parade, as well as ladders that have adults on them yet no kids, are the scum of the earth.
