Earlier this year I landed on IR with testicular cancer which had spread into the lymph nodes in my abdomen. Had surgeries, chemo, the works. Back in July I was declared to be in partial remission by my doc after the scan showed the size of the nodes had shrunk by 70% and cleared me to go back to work.

Just had the 3 month later pet scan and this crap has spread like wildfire from my abdomen into my chest. From what I know it's just the nodes and hasn't infected any organs yet, but it's sitting right next to my heart and lungs. This weekend I get to clean out of the semi again and get ready to be tied to a chemo chair until the tumors are small enough to get cut out, that's the original plan anyway. My doc has been consulting with other docs at the Mayo Clinic and MD Anderson to get the best plan of action. I was told to get ready for surgery or to start chemo next week, basically just be prepared.

I won't lie - I'm officially scared. 40 years old and having to think about where I want life insurance money to go is just...yikes. I've felt better in the last three months than I had in the previous 18 which was why this hit me like a sack of bricks - I was sort of expecting to get a clean slate, instead I'm hit with the absolute worst case scenario.

Cancer.
Friggin.
Sucks.

ETA - ah crap wrong board. Admins, little help?

Prayers and keep fighting. Also rely on those around you for support, especially people outside your immediate family and closest friends.

You’d be surprised by the number of people willing to help, but often don’t know exactly how. Don’t be afraid to ask.

I have no advice to give, another poster said many people will say if you need help to just to ask. They dont know, what to do.

Let them pick up your groceries, bring you and your family dinner. If you dont want them to pay, then you pay and just let them be the delivery. Trust me, they will do it and it will help you out.

Hell, if you lived close to me, id bring you dinner one night.

But you need to focus and fight for your family. Let them do the menial crap like cut the grass and stuff.

But you can do it man.

Have you reached out to any of those Cancer center type places?

I have known some peeps who, their doctor and such pretty much wrote them off, and they went to one of those centers, got some experimental stuff done, and they beat the disease for another decade+. Were told by doctor to stop chemo, load up with pain killers, and enjoy last year or 2 of life.

Mainly just curious if you have looked outside of the modern medicine, and into experimental and other stuff?

Prayers to you during this time. 40 years old is way too young for any kind of disease like cancer. Best of luck.

“Life ain’t fair and the world is mean”

I’m also 40 and I wouldn’t have the strength to make that post. You’ll be on our prayer list.

Maybe I'm a little negative, but I live every day like I might be dead tomorrow. Worry about insurance and what I'll leave my kids. Kiss them all before we leave for the day just in case.

All the best to you man, I know you're scared. But don't ever expect anything out of life, eventually we all gone. Just feel lucky you on this side of the dirt today. Who knows, the other side of the dirt might be all steak and sex with Oregon cheerleaders bro. Get past the fear and don't give up. My worst fear is dying while giving up. Gonna die with my hands around death's neck bro. frick death and his couch.

Keep fighting man. All we can do. You get punched in the mouth, you go down.

But you get up, spit the blood out, grit your teeth and grin.
Because they ain’t beat you yet

Mayo has come through solid for several family members.
You're in good hands.

Godspeed.

I know a guy who did exactly this. Told me the docs in Louisiana/Texas told him he was done and gave him sub 5 years to live. So he searched the nation until he found a doctor willing to basically try something that the doctor said would likely kill him. Got treated. Had it come back, got treated again, and again, and again. This was 20 years ago. He's still rolling. Type A personality, refuse to die, and working as a VP with a wife 10+ years younger than he is. Thanks for posting this and reminding me to tell this story.
