This makeshift bedroom, which its owner prefers to call a pod, is no larger than a wide bookshelf and inconspicuously stationed at one corner of an apartment living room in the Sunset District neighborhood. Its exterior resembles a large crate, while its inside houses a twin bed, a fold-up desk and some LEDs.

At 8 feet long and 4.5 feet tall, the wooden box requires Peter Berkowitz to duck to get inside, but he assured The Post in a phone interview Monday night that his new home is “honestly very comfortable.”

“I really don’t feel like I’ve taken a hit in terms of my quality of life,” said Berkowitz, 25. “I don’t really notice I live in the pod anymore.”

He's never had sex. That's why he doesn't notice.

I wonder if his friend tells him to get in his kennel when he's being annoying when company is over.

why?

If he's working out there and has been featured in the new yorker I imagine he's not eeking out a paycheck. He gets full access to the kitchen/bathroom/etc, so really he's just paying for a place to go to sleep and chill. And according to the median 1BR price, he's saying about $3,000 a month.

I'd say it's pretty smart actually.

Sort of what I was thinking. I assume he has access to the rest of the apartment as well and just ducks in there to sleep. Now $400 is high but it is san fran.

This.

I would probably sleep like a baby in that thing. Like being in a rigid tent with electricity and a mattress.

He doesn't hang out in there all the time. He basically is just paying $400 a month for a bed while still getting access to the rest of the apartment, which is a crazy cheap price for SF.

I assume his rent covers the cost to shower and utilize fridge space.
