I’m glad them things ain’t in Louisiana. Wild cats are fricking crazy. If I ever saw one while hunting or something, the three S rule would definitely apply to me. I ain’t taking any chances.

According to the last Animal vs. Man thread we had on here, 75% of the OT could have fought this lion off with one hand tied behind their back.

Statistics say a full grown male would likely survive a mountain lion attack. They are rarely fatal.

I guess you've never heard of bag and season limits. They've been so unsuccessful for whitetail deer, turkeys, alligators, bears, etc.

You really mar up your "above the fray!!!" moderate facade when your knee jerk reaction is to take it away from citizens and put it in government hands.

Then why are elk not endangered? People flock from all over the country, world even, to hunt Elk in Colorado, NM, and other mountain states.

If there are only a certain number of tags allowed to be filled each year, the population won’t go extinct. I don’t think anyone is calling for open season on cougars like we see with wild hogs, people just want to be able to hunt one and not be an agent of the DWF.

16/27 were children. Grown men are very likely to survive an attack. They'll get some gnarly wounds, but survive. This is a crazy OP. Sounds like the cat might've been starving or something. It stuck around it's kill.

quote:

A total of 126 attacks, 27 of which were fatal,[1] have been documented in North America in the past 100 years. Fatal cougar attacks are extremely rare and occur much less frequently than fatal snake bites, fatal lightning strikes, or fatal bee stings.[2][3][4] Children are particularly vulnerable. The majority of the child victims listed here were not accompanied by adults.

As with many predators, a cougar may attack if cornered, if a fleeing human stimulates their instinct to chase, or if a person "plays dead." Standing still however may cause the cougar to consider a person easy prey.[5] Exaggerating the threat to the animal through intense eye contact, loud shouting, and any other action to appear larger and more menacing, may make the animal retreat.

Humans are capable of fending off cougars, as adult humans are generally larger. It is even possible for humans to win a fight against a cougar, such as the case of Travis Kauffman, who choked a juvenile cougar to death when attacked while jogging.[6] Fighting back with sticks and rocks, or even bare hands, is often effective in persuading an attacking cougar to disengage.[

That sounds like a predatory attack given the mountain lion was still at the scene of the attack.

The article said they were collecting shed antlers, maybe this altered their scent and gave mixed visual clues to trigger the cat into predator mode?

Also, wondered if maybe the two kids were doing some recreational drugs or alcohol? It's not like they were actually hunting with weapons, so maybe they were on more of a lark and not acting the way serious hunters or hikers do and this attracted the cat?

Again, not to blame the victims or even saying there is anything wrong with being slightly mind altered on a walk in the woods. Just saying it could have unintended consequences in woods inhabited by an apex predator.

If anyone wants a good podcast to listen to check out Tooth and Claw. It it is about animal attacks. Skip to the Chimpanzee Attack about Mo the Chimp then go back and listen to the others.

Buddy of mine was a bow hunter in MT. Said he was stalked for two hours by a big cat. He could hear it, briefly sight it, but never could shoot it.

Said he couldnt walk by the time it was over, his muscles had been rigid for hours trying to spot that cat stalking him.
