If you can't handle living in Baton Rouge, you probably can't handle much of anything.

it was ghetto for my last 2 years of law school and they hadn't even built all of hat new shite north of the gates by then

and there is no way the number of people who lived in TL/sharlo is close to the same as all of these complexes. hell it may not even be equal to one of the larger ones

I don't know they are keeping them all filled either.

Enrollment in Fall 2015 was about 31.5K total at LSUBR...
Enrollment in Fall 2004 was about 31.5K total at LSUBR...

So that's not the issue. At least not in the last 10 years.

Source: LINK

ETA: They go back to Fall 1998, where enrollment was just under 30K... so that's not even a huge increase between 1998 and 2015.

traffic

distance to get places (with more traffic)

really high COL (esp for what you get)

expanding "bad" areas

i mean if i was going to deal with the traffic, spread, and cost, why wouldn't i just move to Austin or Boise?

You aren't even including the giant apartment complex they built on Perkins down from College. I think it has 900 units? And the IBM complex downtown as well as the one going in where the bank building used to be.

Not really sure where all of these people are coming from to fill these.

BR has a ton of demand for living in those areas and for those types of individuals. Pretty much the only market in BR that is going to struggle is student housing. All the shite you are seeing built up is the result of a massive over correction from a few years ago when student housing demand in Baton Rouge was through the roof.

Well, then I guess it has to mostly be the TOPS effect. My parents would have never paid for me to live in one of these massive new complexes, it was Plantation Trace at $800/month total for a 4-BR place.

I guess all the cheap former-student places are turning into low-income housing as the students get hooked up with nice new digs thanks to TOPS savings.

traffic

I'm not gonna act like BR doesn't have bad traffic for its size, because it absolutely does, but there are ways to avoid it on a daily basis. Mainly just starting by where you live in relation to your daily commute. Don't live where you have to take the interstate everyday and you won't see much of a problem.

really high COL

What? Baton Rouge? Baton Rouge doesn't have a high cost of living. I know its just one example, but BR has the lowest average gas prices in the country for a major city.

I handle living in St Louis just fine.

Baton Rouge is too small with not enough to do to put up with the shitty aspects of it.

People spending their TOPS money. Since they don't have to pay tuition, mommy and daddy can afford to rent a nice apartment for their kiddies. When the TOPS money dries up watch them all turn Section 8.

BR has stagnated at best first of all, and that area as far as I know is outside of the city limits.

what's the cost for a good apartment close to downtown these days?

i used to say that BR had the feel of a big city with lots of big city amenities, but it didn't have a lot of the issues of a big city. now it has kind of flipped and has lots of issues of a big city without a lot of the positives you get from what you give up

Rent in BR is astonishingly high compared to cities similarly in size.

Are you shitting? Another new neighborhood? My commute to campus is steadily getting longer and longer with additional traffic and stop lights.
