Watch how the crowd reacts. The people on the right flinch to the right, and the people on the left flinch to the left. The guy in the blue sweater and hat up front actually watches the rock go by. The guy up front in the red is the only one who doesn't flinch, and that's because he is looking through binoculars so he doesn't see it.
Also, at the very front of the crowd on the left a guy with a brown shirt and blue jeans takes a big step to left and stares as the rock whizzes by. He's the first to react to it.
From the reactions I say this is real.

The rock was much closer to taking out the shorter person on the left than the bald guy in grey. But the angle makes it look closer to him and I guess his reaction being more dramatic also made it seem closer.

Well that sheds new light on the subject.
