The LSU athletic department, in an email sent to its 350-plus athletes, communicated its “respect and support” for them to publicly express their opinions regarding the Alton Sterling case, but cautioned the athletes to be mindful of media attention and respectful to others.

The mass email, sent Wednesday afternoon, was obtained by The Advocate from multiple sources. An LSU spokesman declined comment when reached.

In the email, LSU senior associate athletics director Miriam Segar offers counseling for those athletes who need it, encourages them to avoid “potentially violent situations” and insists they not wear LSU gear when expressing their opinion on the matter.LINK

Good. Most of their opinions are probably uniformed anyway.

So LSU is doing damage control because the city its located in has pretty shitty leadership? Good on them.

Just like you're not allowed to make political statements in uniform. Makes sense.

I think that's reasonable.

But it should also apply to their social media accounts. Avatar, screen name, etc...

Sure. And there can be consequences to your "free speech".

i think this is about as appropriate a way to deal with this as an athletic admin can do.

You realize their scholarships aren't guaranteed, right? Sure, go get all "entitled" on everyone and your broke arse will have to pay for college just like the rest of the world.

Who cares. They don't want anyone speaking for the whole university just like no business would want a single employee representing the whole company unless they were appointed to do so.

Go on the news wearing your employer's logo and make a political statement that may reflect poorly upon the company because half of your clients will strongly disagree with your stance. See how that works out for you.

LSU athletic department is playing this smart. They're not trying to restrict the athletes' right to speak out, but just asking them not to wear LSU gear while doing it to avoid backlash from boosters threatening to withhold donations.
