I have always known the roads in Louisiana are subpar. It didn't really set in until I moved to Dallas. The roads in DFW are mostly new and maintained.

Now when I come in for the holidays and know what else is out there, I'm always surprised by the terrible roads.

I've heard it's because years ago Louisiana was one of the last states to raise the drinking age to 21 and lost funding because of it. Is this true?

Or is our budget/handling funds that bad?

If you wander around some areas of Dallas itself the city streets are lousy. The overall area does a fine job with upkeep of the major arteries.

That was a long time ago, shouldn't be a valid excuse anymore

The reason louisiana raised the drinking age to 21 was so they wouldnt lose fed money. So they never lost any money. That was 1997ish btw.

1995...remember it well since I turned 18 that summer and was able to drink freely until they pushed it to 21 in the September/October timeframe.

No.
LA leads the nation in environmental responsibility.

All our roads are built of the highest standards of biodegradable materials and design.

You are correct. My brother turned 18 in 1994 and could drink for a year or so before they changed it. It was 21 when I started lsu in 1996.

It's probably a combination of low gas tax, corrupt state government, poor substrate and heavy rainfall.

OP, the synical but truthful answer is that the state simply does a shitty job of maintaining the roads. Ever notice how the interstate roads seem to be in better sape? It's because the feds are responsible for the maintenance. The state has been so derelict in its obligations that it's beyond criminal.
But don't worry, JBE is about to raise the gas tax...again. And just like previous tax raises that are for "dedicated funds" to finally fix all our traffic woes the state will do nothing to make roads better or safer. Enjoy paying $3+ per gallon.

It's because of the levees. Remove them, and the roads will be sustained and brought back to their original state of tar and concreteness.

It's because most of the roads are built on ridges in the swamp. shite subsides, roads crack.

A tiny portion of east Texas maybe.

North and west Texas has some of the shortest roads in the nation.

The water table affects roads a deal here, not much to do with bad engineering or lack of funding. When soils are saturated with water, vs when soils dry out and soil particles collapse on each other causes a lot of stress on road infrastructure. The reason new orleans is prone to potholes is because the water table is so high that when soils under the roads dry out, the foundation on which the roads are constructed collapses bc much of Nola used to be cypress swamp. Texas has a more arid climate, which makes for a low water table and more stable foundation.

I've never seen another state so lousy at improving road conditions. Most states seem to take a proactive stance toward roadwork whereas Louisiana seems to address issues years after major problems become evident--always playing catchup far too late.

I used to live in NEPA, our roads here in the GBR area have nothing on PA. Their roads are truely horrible. The highways that go to hospitals seem to be the only ones maintained and resurfaced regularily.

But this does not excuse our horrible roads. For the older crowd that remember a 2 lane interstate and lights at every intersection on florida blvd we have come a long way
