300 million being cut from Higher Ed. Gas economy suffering. On verge of getting lowered credit rating for 7 years of budget shortfalls, yet they get a 20% raise?

Seems like now is not the time for that

They clearly aren't paid enough. Their average height of 5'2" suggests some serious undernourishment.

They should receive a cut. higher education is much more important than state trooper pay raises.

It is too bad we don't have a governor that has a back bone. Areas that are untouchable should be cut. Also education should take a hard look at cutting some schools that don't pull weight vs taking from everyone. The short term pain of some bitching would be much better than harming the state long term.

money is being generated by LSP:

quote:

Starting pay, with benefits, would go from around $35,000 to $46,000. The increase was approved last summer but the money just became available, and still needs to be shifted from a fund that collects increased fines from drivers without insurance. The joint legislative budget committee is set to vote on moving that money Friday.

Louisiana State Police says the raise is well over due, especially when comparing their current salary to departments like Gonzales that start pay at about $44,000 a year. But departments like Baton Rouge that start pay around $31,000 a year complain it puts them at a disadvantage, especially when it comes to recruiting new officers.

pretty sure the same can't be said about higher ed. I don't know that public higher ed has ever actually paid for itself. Higher Ed can take a hit and should. Its a bloated, inefficient system that needs to live within its means and get off of the taxpayers credit card.

they haven't had a raise in a while from what I understand. They were promised one a while back during the last budget issue, and the state wouldn't do it. They also put in a hiring freeze. Last fall was the first classs they hired in a long time. Underfunding police is definitely not the way to go.

it makes a lot of sense to chop off SUNO. Sadly that wont happen because short term backlash scares Jindal.

They received the 20% raises AFTER they knew about the massive budget shortfall. My guess is that they don't care. Louisiana is a police state. They protect the top dogs and the top dogs protect them.

Law enforcement has become a huge industry and the source of a lot of political power at local levels.

Higher ed should be cut if the correct cuts are made. Hammering every school equally is stupid. LSU, SLU, La tech, ULL pull weight. There are plenty of schools that don't pull weight and they should be on the chopping block. We have far too many colleges for a state our size. The issue happens to be the schools that deserve to be slashed or even closed wont be. They will only slash across the board.

It is just stupid to look at higher education as the only thing that needs to be slashed. I could go through the budget and find program after program that is worthless. Higher Education might not directly fund its self but if you destroy higher education then you are hurting the state. The smart students will leave in even higher numbers and make homes elsewhere. Then you have a state that has very little home grown talent and businesses wont even look at coming.

They would continue to write 0 to big rigs in construction zones. The trucks in right lane signs are a huge waste in the budget since it isn't enforced.

LSP, if anything, went out of their way to work with the state. They didn't have any raises or new hires since 2008 which cut their numbers significantly and the state still had budget issues.

The problems with the budget lies elsewhere.
