Lost wallet, was returned, guy left his number

I lost my wallet yesterday while riding my bike to work (must have not put it fully in the saddle bag) and when I got home, I found it in my mailbox with a note.
It read:
"Happy New my name is DeAngelo, found it to you my # (insert phone number)"
All the cash was gone (of course), and everything was out of place. Credit cards were still there and as of right now, no suspicious charges have been made.
Now I'm very grateful that DeAngelo returned my wallet, but do I text or call him to say thanks? The cynic in me thinks he wants something...like a reward. Is that wrong? Because cynic is me also believes he took my $80. He already has all my information...I really don't want to give him my phone number as well. But I do kinda feel obligated to at least say "thank you" as well...
OT...offer your insight please

He's trying to double tap you
Call him up and offer him a reward, then put lipstick on, so you'll at least feel pretty when he fricks you this time

Cancel your cards stat, especially before calling him. Yes him leaving his number is asking for money.

I misread the OP.
DeAngelo is looking for a reward. Any decent person would just return the wallet and leave it at that.

Someone else probably stole your money... even if I did return the wallet, there's no way I'm giving you any way to know who I am if I took your cash

Call him and accuse him of taking your $$. Then build a moat around your casa.

You could be right...or, he might have picked up your wallet after someone else just took out the cash rifled through the card info then tossed it.
ETA...I know someone who found a wallet in a parking lot, pulled out the ID...looked up the owner and called to tell him he found the wallet. When he met to return it, the owner was incensed asking about $200 that was in it. It was empty when my buddy found it. Not sure if the wallet owner actually lost $200 or not...but he came within a red C*nt hair of gaining an arse-whipping by getting in my friend's face. In the wallet owner's defense...my buddy was about 5'9, weighed about 170. You couldn't tell by looking at him that he was a Martial Arts instructor. Fortunately, the wallet guy just got in his face yelling and swearing instead of taking a swing.

This too. Text him online from one of those programs that sends it from a unanimous number. Don't give him your phone number also.

Don't text him. Call him from a work phone. That way you can at least tell him thanks and hear his tone. I wouldn't give him my cell.

Call him and ask to meet at Sonic.
Then ask him where the hell your $80 is.
If he plays dumb, show him your knuckles.
??????
Profit
Also, cancel all cards and get new ones.

Probably took down all your CC info in hopes you won't cancel them soon...will let a couple weeks go by then raise hell.

He probably didn't take your $80. He probably found your wallet after someone else had already taken your money.
You usually don't rob someone and then leave your phone number with them.
Keep in mind that DeAngelo might have seen your ID pic and wants to to toss your salad and then have you service him.

A while back in lived in downtown Houston and did this for 2 years, it was awesome. I only put 6,000 miles on my car during that span.

IRONICALLY, I FOUND a wallet 2 weeks ago. I kind of said something about it in the "life advice" thread...
It had $30.00 in it with a couple of bank card and a DL but of course NO phone #....I took it to his bank, figuring they had some contact info for him and left my business card with it.
I did this so if he called me I could tell him where I found it AND to suggest to him (and NOW to all of you people with no land line) that he put something in his wallet giving his cell phone #. It would have saved him a day+ of worrying and looking.
I wanted nothing from his wallet...it ain't my stuff or my money.

sounds like someone has been watching shameless recently and was like thought it was a great idea to take the money, return the wallet/purse and act like they didn't take the money in hopes for a reward

He's testing the waters with you. Wants to see if you are fresh or fishy tasting.
