Losing family connection to hometown?

I lived in south Louisiana from birth through graduating at LSU and have lived in the Houston area since then (15+ years). My parents still live in south Louisiana and we enjoy visiting about 6 times per year, including holidays, Mardi Gras, LSU football games, and some festivals.
As my parents are getting up in age, they are considering whether to downsize their home/property and move to the Houston area so they can be closer to my family (and grandchildren). I'd love to have them closer but would miss having a reason to visit Louisiana. I've made at least one home LSU game for the past 15 years, often at spur of the moment since it's an easy drive with added benefit of seeing family. I have other extended family there and could always find a place to stay but obviously wouldn't go nearly as often and not the same.
If anyone has gone through a similar situation and had their family move away from the hometown that you grew up in, is it something that you just get used to or do you end up missing those visits for the rest of your life?

I'm sure Baton Rouge would still allow you to visit.

You lived there until you graduated college and don't have one friend that still lives there?

buy a nice rv or travel trailer and stay at a local campground...problem solved.

They will need your help as they continue to age. Let them move close to you. You can still attend LSU games without them living in LA.

Your parents seem pretty selfless while you seem pretty selfish.
You might be adopted.

Having them close as they age far outweighs the connection to the town. I went through it. My folks moved out of the town we grew up in when my wife was pregnant with our first child.
It's a huge benefit to the boys having their grandparents close. Extremely handy for us. Plus, it was going to be unsustainable as they got older and much more dependent on people to do everyday things for them.
I have not been "back home" in nearly 5 years and do not regret the decision.

I had a buddy with pretty much the exact same circumstances. He ended up on meth and lost it all.

Moving back to Louisiana is an option. There are some pro's and con's that I've considered under separate consideration.
I'm not sure that my parents would ultimately make the move, it's more a matter of whether they would downsize in south Louisiana or closer to me. Part of their decision may include how well I'd sell them on the idea of moving to my area.
Roughly half of my close friends from south La. still live there and the other half live in the Houston area. My best-case scenario is to maintain homes in both areas for the rest of my life but attempting to weigh all possibilities.

I just relocated my parents and siblings out here to AZ after the flood. Figured since they were going to have to start over, why not start over where I could be nearby as my parents age(none of their adult fully functioning children live in LA). Also...with my siblings being mentally challenged...when my parents pass it will be up to me and my other brother(who lives in Cali) to care for our siblings. This allows that transition to be a much smoother one.
I'm sure I'll go back for a visit at some point....but I will be honest and say not anytime soon. I still have good friends in BR though that I would miss seeing.

If you can be the reason for someone to get out of south Louisiana then you better do that kind service.

I rarely go back to Louisiana and can't say I miss it to be honest
