If that's all you need don't pay much. I did what you are talking about for my business and had zero experience. I just used one of those make your own website templates.

I would try to find someone that does websites on the side for a bit of extra money.

That's pretty much what I'm looking for. I just don't want it to look like front page 98. I'll try to do some research

With those templates you could find some kid that knows computers and sit down with him. Pay him $100 and just tell him what you think looks good and what doesn't.

Using the templates is pretty easy. It just takes a few hours and is a bit tedious if you haven't done it before.

You would think finding someone with the know how would be simple. I am willing to pay good cash money and have been trying to find someone for a year with no luck. It is truly an area where someone with know how could make a decent living it would seem. I may have to break down and pay the rates to have a national firm do it.

FWIW, one of my clients recently dropped $70K for a multi page website. They overpaid but still gives you an idea of what is out there.

It all depends on what you're going to do with the site.

If you're just going to use it as a line on your business card and drive traffic to it via offline sources all you need is a simple online brochure type of design with decent content that's geared towards conversion without any worrying about SEO.

Shouldn't be much. Couple hundred. You can do it yourself too. I always say anyone can build a website, but not everyone can build one that puts money in your pocket. :-)

Now if you need a site to show up in search engines for your service or goods, it's a whole new ball game. Think finding a designer is hard? Try to find a decent seo guy. Luckily I know how to do this myself so I can just tell my outsourcers what to do.

On a local level, it's not all that difficult but can be "challenging".

Nothing you can't do yourself with a little time and money.

There isn't a one off seo type of service that works for too long. That's why you need to be on top of it yourself every month or hire someone to stay on top of it for you.

The design of the site takes on a whole new dynamic.

As an example, take a look at plumberseo.net (these guys are really good. Zero connection to them) and look at some of their client sites.

They build out tons of pages with content. But it's also 100% geared towards conversion.

These guys charge anywhere from $1500 - $4000 a month, but the roi is pretty insane on that.

So hopefully that gives you an idea on what you're looking at.

Again, it's all based on what you need and whether you want your site to just be an online brochure (nothing wrong with that) or built with the idea that it's going to be used as an active marketing tool.

If you need some help on finding a designer let me know. I have a few resources I could send your way.

I worked in that industry as a web developer for 6 years before moving to software. That's standard

What you're asking for is essentially a glorified brochure, so you shouldn't be paying a ton. I'd say $250-500.

Also depends on whether you expect the web designer to create copy and graphics/images. If you're supplying images and text, obviously pay less.

One other things to consider: how often will the site needs updates, and who's going to do them? Some people will do a site for you cheaply, then try to bill you up the arse for updates.

I'm sorry but that's ridiculous.

1. Meet with client to figure out the design and different pages he wants
2. Designer comes up with the design
3. Get that design approved by the client (assume it gets approved on the first go)
4. Developer builds the site from the design.
5. Add content to the site supplied by the client (assume the client gives the web team all content)

Tell me how many hours of work you think that would be.

I recommend using a service like squarespace first. Then if it gets traction and is worth the investment, move to getting a custom site built.

Dont go the random kid route. You will end up stuck not being able to get in touch with them to update your content.

you will need to purchase a domain. Thats a monthly/yearly fee very inexpensive.

you will need to purchase a web host package. Monthly/yearly fee also very inexpensive.

do you want to be able to edit your own content? how often will it update?

do you have intentions of selling stuff?

Do you have all your content ready? images in web format? text for your pages?

Are you worried how your site is ranked on google/yahoo.

these are all things that greatly affect the price and most are included when you work with a professional.

I doubt you will get any professional built website for less than 1k. if you want it done correct. You can do it cheaper on your own, you just get limited on design, but get the ability to update things on your own if you put in a little time to learn the backend panel used by your host.

you may say 1k sounds high but just putting it at 80/ hour x 12 hours is 960.

You should look for a search engine optimization consultant who can do web design.

A good looking website is meaningless if it's not set up to have a plan on how to drive customers to it.

40-60% should be on the seo side.
