I'm 23 and recently got a job there. I was looking around the uptown/garden district area and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I'm looking for something around $1,100 or less (doubt I'll find much lower than that though). I'll likely be living by myself but there's a chance someone I know gets a job there and rooms with me.

What apartments or areas would you recommend? Are there any areas (besides the obvious ones) that should avoid? I became a little paranoid because I found a place I liked around St Charles and Jackson and it didn't seem like a bad area, but someone that lived there a few years ago said I should avoid being that far down St Charles.

Any advice would be appreciated

Yea St. Charles and Jackson area is changing, but not quick enough for you to want to live there I suspect. You would be ok on the river side, but NOT on the lake side of St. Charles in that area. your price point may make the nice Uptown areas tough though. I would check out Mid City for more reasonable, but still relatively safe, options.

Trulia/Craigslist will help. Don't give anyone any money until you're signing lease papers. I talked to like 20 people who were missionaries in Africa and I had to pay to
Have them send me keys lol...or just spend a nice day walking around... Every time I go
Running I see tons of places for rent... I think I saw a pretty cool place for rent yesterday on camp/Nashville

That's not too bad an area unless you live north of Carondelet.

Check car insurance rates asap. If you're new to New Orleans, car insurance rates may surprise you.

I swear that's how I read it at first. I think it's just being caught up with all that's going on though

200 Carondelet has a few studios under $1100. There is nothing else in the area that is within his budget.

I've seen a lot of places for rent lately in the area where Oak and Carrollton meet.

That's actually in my current top 2. I like it. Parking is the biggest concern. I didn't love their studios when I visited but I wouldn't mind them. I really liked their one bedrooms though.

Look at Mid City. Lived on Banks when I was in Nola last year and loved it. Try to stay west of Jefferson Davis, north of D'hemecourt, east of I-10, and south of Orleans. South of Broad is completely ghetto.

Carondelet is one (1) block off St Charles. It definitely gets scarier the further away from St Charles you get.

I've heard Mid City is decent. I'll have to check it out. I just liked the idea of being that close to magazine and the bar scene over there.

The area between St. Charles, Napoleon, Magazine, and Louisiana is a good area to look into. I would rent half of a double or part of a 4-plex or something if I were you.

Once you pass Napoleon going further Uptown you can venture above St. Charles and still be in a safe neighborhood.
