Family backstory: So there is this kid I know that comes from a complete broken home. Older brother disappeared 2years ago when him and his dad got into a fight and pointed guns at one another (from
My understanding), his dad is a POS that barely works. Him mom is a junkie that is married to a complete and total abusive a-hole.

The kid never graduated HS but got his GED.) Really hasn't where to live and just bounces from couch to couches while working at Popeyes and then one week out of the month he also works as a hole watch at a ship yard.

The kid has no transportation and no help from anyone. He hasn't ever been in any trouble but some of the company he keeps seems to be what will be his eventual downfall, but these are the people allowing him to bounce from couch to couch.

He had one friend text him today saying he needed to come get his clothes and stuff he left over there, that this 'friend' had tossed his belongings in the front yard in the rain.

I gave him a ride to get his wet belongings and brought him to another friend's house.

He often has dreams of grandeur and seems to think money could buy him happiness. And I can agree to an extent especially the 20yo SS.

He told me he woke up one morning and walked over to a Navy recruiters office and said he talked to them but felt they were selling him a dream, then he said he saw the 40+ yo guy walk out he building and get in a cluncker vehicle and he thought 'damn after all those years I'd have to drive that' or something like that

Any hoot... just coming to the OTfor maybe some pointers or resources I could look into that could help this 'kid'. I've mentioned university or 2 year trade school or apprentice ship somewhere, but honestly he seems so turned off by the idea because he has never had anyone every mentjonyhe possibility of going to school and he equates it to going to a local public HS back when he was in 10th grade.

I'm leaning towards taking him personally to take the ASVAB and to a recruiter myself. I don't know too many people that say they regret serving their country, I know I beat myself up for it for going all the way through MEPS and dropping out at the end.

Any other ideas y'all can bounce around would be appreciated. Seriously this type of situation is on a fultrum where he can end up being a productive member or someone that lives as a burden to the system or whatnot.

Thanks in advance.

ETA: also when he talked about his brother disappearing, he mention how his brother loved guns and that what if his brother went way back in the swamp to kill himself and that how no one would ever find him before the birds and alligators ate him. Said they had both talked about it.... sucks.... I know this kid doesn't have much going for him, and I would hate for him to get caught up

Eta: Also he is about 6'3" and pretty damn skinny. I noticed in the last couple weeks he lost weight, what he said was about 13lbs, and he said it coincided with the Pizza Hut he works out cutting down on the employees eating on the job and he told me a lot of times that was his only big single meal of the day.. man sucks to hear that shite.... not to make this about me, because I'm blessed but there was a time where I also struggled so I have a hard time consciously seeing a man not eat.

Sounds to me like he's on the precipice of disaster. No role models, no real motivation, no direction, and only one opportunity. I think the military is probably the only thing that could save him at this point.

Explain to him that maybe the 40 year old CHOOSES to drive that old clunker. He may drive that old clunker to a bad arse house with a bad arse wife and only drive his Hummer on weekends.

Send him to the Marine Corps. We are in need of metal workers and hydraulic techs in the airwing.

Any history of drug use? Apologies if you covered that in the op and I missed it.

If he is a user, he will need to be clean for 3 months before entering the military.

Also getting him involved in martial arts might help him find some direction

Get him into the military. It will save his life. Thank you for being there for this kid. You'll never know how much you helped him.

OP is a good soul. Anyone without direction who loves guns should be in the military. It'll be a step up for him

I guess you could explain to him that he can make whatever he wants out of a military career. It just depends on how much he's willing to put in it. He could join the reserves, go to college, then either get a real job, or go to OCS. Or he can go active duty and still possibly get a college degree and go to OCS.

I mean, if he thinks making it in the military means he's going to work in a local recruiting office and drive a crap car, then he's either really naive or is just looking for an excuse not to join. Either way, it shouldn't be hard to show him military salaries and how someone can work their way up to the point they won't be driving a shite box at 40.

But go drive around any military base and I guarantee you will see just as many tricked out 4x4s as you do shitty vehicles (of course this could be the reason some of those guys have to drive poo mobiles later in life).

I take back what I said about getting him in the Marine Corps because a few years ago they changed their recruiting standards. They won't take anyone with a GED unless they have 15 college credits on top of their GED.

The military however would be a great place for him to go. They will give him values, discipline, and skills he will be able to take to the grave. The benefits would be great for him as well.

I think he smokes a little weed for sure.....
And know he has had nights where he took a few 'zannys' and drank a couple cheap beers with it. Nothing that most kids his age aren't doing..... seems like taking xanax is as popular with the 25< year old kids as smoking bud

But I know he isn't addicted to anything.

I mean he even smokes cigs not even addicted to that, he just does it when he has them or around friends... i was with him a lot he last few days and he never once bought and cigs or smoked any...

But it's just a matter of time before he is addicted to tobacco and WILL need them, so yeah I believe he is at a crossroads. He turns 21I think in October.

I may take him up to talk to recruiters and go with him to possibly curb some of the smoke that gets blown up his arse.

Also on the asvab, would it be a good idea to sit down with him a couple times a week for a few weeks and refresh him up on a couple subjects to maybe help him qualify for a better job if he does decide to go thr military route?
