I've never taken mine off. But my husband has on his. You need two people for it. He has never gotten me to help...always gets a buddy to come over and help.
He REALLY wanted a soft top for his Rubicon, but wanted a manual as well. Couldn't find both so had to decide which one he wanted more. The hardtops are MUCH quieter though. And for me working in the ghetto...I can't have a soft top. Would be too scared some chollo would slash it and break into my jeep while I'm at work. The freedom top(panels over the driver/front passenger seats) is easy to take off...feels like you have a giant sunroof over you.
Big downside of hardtop....if you take it off and are out driving and it rains...yeah you screwed. Unless you buy one of the bikini tops for them. My husband loved the ability to take the soft top down and put back up in a few minutes.

You can buy a pulley thing that you attach to roof of your garage that you can take hardtop off with just one person(and even store it there hanging if you wish). We rent and landlord has some stupid light up where he would need to install it at so my husband didn't look into it further.
