I probably could have agreed with your statement years ago, and it's still not an entirely crazy or off the wall statement, but it's changing more and more, especially as more television contracts/money is being made.
Many great players go to college now days, probably more than ever. You'll always have some of the best high school players going pro if they're drafted early enough, or truly believe they have what it takes, simply bc of the money. However, some top talent tells the MLB not to draft them high bc they won't sign since they want to go to college, especially if their family is well off. It happened this year with LSU's signee Cabrera.
He's been being looked at for awhile as a top pick, but his parents really wanted him to go to school, as did he, plus they are fairly well off, so he was telling them don't waste an early round pick on him. Still, scouts were at Parkview all the time trying to win him over, but he didn't budge. Thus, they drafted him in the 26th round, more as a symbol than anything, and he's LSU bound with a bar many scouts think is pro ready.
Also, many top picks are from college now days and a lot of them get the call up quick bc of the experience college has given them. Once you go pro, it's tough, and at 18, many aren't mature enough.
Of course, cases can be made for both sides and I've gone on way too much on this in the LNST . A little buzzed, so forgive me.
