I lived on Summit Avenue in St. Paul from 79-82. I really liked it.
One word of advice:
Where ever you live and work be sure to have covered parking unless you enjoy scraping ice off of your windshield every time you go somewhere in your car from September until April.

In fricking Riverside and Brooklyn Park. You aren't going there anyway. Lived most of my youth in Lake Minnetonka. Not a bad place, but would probably get closer to MPLS, such as Edina, St. Louis Park, Eden Prairie, Apple Valley, Eagan. If you want some land close enough to TC, north metro is still reasonable (Vadnais Heights, Andover).

Depends on the person baw. I'm from BR and absolutely hate the summers here. I could move to Idaho and be perfectly fine. My wife is a Bama girl and hates when it dips below 50.

My brother lived in Apple Valley and now lives in Golden Valley. He likes both areas just fine except for the Winter, of course. Apple Valley is more in the suburbs and Golden Valley is more in the city.
I'm sure there are plenty of things to do in a city of that size. The people seem weird to me. They are standoffish unless they know you, whereas in the south strangers often say hello if they cross paths.

I lived up there the year it snowed so much the Metrodome roof collapsed under all the snow. That was the first time it collapsed.

The commute does suck. Coming from any part of the metro blows. If you want to work in the twin cities I would recommend St. Paul. It's much easier to access and cities right next door are not crowded with gang bangers or samolies that hate whites.
Many of the big companies 3M, Best Buy, and CHS all have moved outside the cities. You just have to find the right location/company and find a reasonable neighborhood.

It all depends on where you want to live. You can live in the burbs out from the city's for pretty cheap.

St. Paul is older and less upbeat than Minneapolis.
All said and done, doesn't really matter where you live because it's pretty easy getting around with the light rail and uber. Commuting is the worst part.

Got a summer home up there in New Brighton to be with grandkids. It's right there near St Paul. Yes, the homes are older while St Cloud seems to be more younger families. and have a sibling that lives up there. I enjoy the cooler summers with less humidity. Snows last of October or dusted sometime up to late April. Great quality of life during g the summer. They do have long winters. Family oriented area with lots of things to do. Nice place to raise kids with good schools outside the city. Now minium wage is going up to $15 an hour in the city of move St Cloud or suburbs or you will pay out the butt for basic meal or groceries etc. You can try to get use to the winters while trade off is a better quality of life compared to living in Louisiana especially if you want a family.

I've been several times for work/vacation but really considering heading up there. Any other thoughts would be appreciated? TIA
Lived there for a while. Cold winters but the place is heaven compared to Louisiana.
I worked right down town, but lived in Elk River. About an hour north west of the cities. It's growing bit still very much country. Most all of the suburbs are nice. I drove to Maple Grove and took the metro to downtown. As in any big city if you want to drive and park down town you'll pay for it. When I was there it was like $20 per day to park at my building garage. There is no shortage of out door fun to be had there, obviously in the better weather months. Little to no sales tax, but high AF property taxes, however you can see the tax dollars at work improving infrastructure. Not like here where you pay taxes and they vanish into the abyss while the whole shite house crumbles around you.
Snow and Ice on the roads is not usually a problem unless you get way out in the country. Yes they get a lot, but they've been around the block a time or two and they are prepared and as long as there is fair warning they keep it slated and plowed. I got caught once on the roads during a flurry, it wasn't that bad. You just drive smart.
The benefits definitely out weight the negatives for me. I plan to return as soon as I can. I returned home to be with and care for a sick family member other wise I would still be there.
eta. BTW coldest temp I saw there was -27 (~-50 with the wind chill). but that's not the norm.
