Anyone hear have any experience living in London for an extended period of time? What're your thoughts? Did you like it? Were the Brits as weird as you thought?

I have the opportunity to move there after school for work but am questioning whether or not I can really leave the US of A. Born and raised here (South La) my entire life.

It's REALLY expensive.

You better get twice the money you would get here if you were working in New York.

Judging from this, you are not mature enough to live abroad and experience other cultures. Maybe you start to see the world first, recognize that other cultures are not "weird", but just different. Do that, and then maybe you will get to the point when you can live in another country and not embarrass the rest of us while doing so.

Would do it for a couple years in a heartbeat. Only thing I wouldn't like is the weather and pretty bad cuisine. I wasn't there for an extended period of time, but have spent a combined month there probably, and really like the culture.

I only spent a week there, but my wife and I both said we could live there if we were able to make enough. It's expensive, but I loved it.

there is no excuse for the weather (it's horrible) and it's really expensive. however of you can swing it financially you should do it. be prepared for the fact that the London you may have in your head is going to be vastly different that the London you will see. You'll also be hours from the rest of Northern Europe

it's one of the worlds great cities
I wouldn't pass up this opportunity

You'll love it. It's the most cosmopolitan city on earth. It's also one of the most expensive cities on earth.

Americans going over there need to practice the old mantra of "looking left, looking right, looking straight ahead" for crossing streets before you leave the states.

If you can, party hard before you leave, and sleep on the plane. Failing that take a pill. Otherwise your first 8-12 hours in the UK will be sleeping off jet lag.

As an American, don't advertise the fact that you are American. Never wear white tennis shoes, for example.

Take heed of this map...

...and stay away from the areas with heavy muslim concentrations at any time of day.

As far as the Brits go, practice your jokes...Brits think Americans are too uptight and have no sense of humor. I kid you not. Also, if you need to lose weight, do so before you go. That's another American stereotype the Brits have about us. That we're all fat.

As far as the Brits themselves. Two words: bad teeth. The class differences are still there, but the Brits seem to evolving towards a generic Brit accent. Prepare yourself for lot's of questions about American politics and culture. Especially crime and race.

My advice, avoid discussing America over there. Say you're there to learn about the UK.

Enjoy!

Well said....

For the record, I've studied and traveled abroad before. I have a true appreciation for other cultures which is why I am considering this transition but go USA..

One of my cousins is a City Manager for an area of Greater London.

He loves watching expats splat themselves on the window that is the difference between U.S. & U.K. life. It isn't just the prohibitive cost difference, you are a stranger in a strange land. It can be ugly for Americans who can't adjust.

If you can adjust to it, it's wonderful and Ryan Air is your friend to easily unlock the rest of Europe.

I lived there for a summer and loved it. It reminded me of a European NYC. Do it if you have the opportunity, you won't regret it.

Ps. Anyone that says London has shitty food does not know what they are talking about. There food scene is as diverse as NYC. British food is just kind of meh so that is why it gets a bad rap.

Yeah I don't get people saying the food in London is shitty. I lived in Camden for 6 months. I really enjoyed it but the pound was more than twice the dollar at the time, so it was quite expensive. That made it difficult to really enjoy the city and all it has to offer since I was just out of school. The clubs can be obnoxious if you are not rich or with 3:1 ratio of women. However it was a great time.

Yeah, of course you can find some good food, but it's typically from Italy, China, India, Middle East, etc. I was probably being unfair and overgeneralizing, but I was mainly getting at the fact that their default cuisine is pretty appalling.

You can obviously seek out some good international stuff if you make an effort. But the OP wouldn't be on vacation, and if he's looking to just get something that's reasonably priced and fast on a weeknight, they don't exactly have a solid offering.

Also, I'm not much of a foodie, so I guess that's another reason I have a different view.

I personally wouldn't do it...I find it tough to move across major culture lines while still being happy. couple that with how expensive the city is and the fact that it sounds like you will be an obvious foreigner who is generally unwelcome and it sounds like a damn miserable time to me...

London is a great city. I personally love the pub culture that you get there especially in some of the smaller towns.

If I was you, I'd look to live away from the Westminster area in either a smaller town outside the city or somewhere like Camden if you could swing it. The train is very convenient there.

The entire city is crazy expensive tho. I'd say it's the most expensive city I've ever been to and I live in nyc.

I'd love to live there for a period of time. Great city. Weather and limited daylight in the winter might get to me but it's not that bad.

I also never understand when people say the food sucks. You have infinitely many options. I always love a good kebab or chip shop on the way home from the post-match pub.

Yes. It is awesome, but stupid expensive to live near the city center. We had a flat in South Kensington. I found the people to be awesome and the girls really like a southern accent.
