What's the difference? It's a sports game. It has slightly different rosters. Game is played essentially the same.

Nah. 2K isn't like Madden with just updated rosters every year. 2K16 has online leagues and a complete overhaul to the General Manager part of the game in franchise mode.

So the need for it to be recent is all about online presence and multiplayer? Kind of like how the old call of duty games don't have anyone on the servers? (I guess, I don't really play much multiplayer)

Huh? CoD is the most played MP game on Xbox and PS usually. IDK why because it sucks but it is.
ETA: 2K is the best sports game made currently and I would want the latest features too if I was the kid.
