And or "kind of." This is definitely something that has been around a while, I think it may be more of an East coast elitist thing, but you definitely hear it with liberal academics a lot. Example, I had a professor in college that had degrees from Harvard and he literally said the following while referring to an English nobleman... "They cut off his head and he 'sort of' died." Like wait what? If they cut his head off he didn't "sort of" die, he all the way just died. Anyone else noticed this or have any knowledge on its origins/prevalence?

That's not how they use it, it's more like... "I sort of bought tickets to a soccer game, and uhh, the opposing team sort of uhh, won the game."

First they kinda sorta die.

Now they kinda sorta don’t know what a woman is.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

To ask a question about linguistics? This has nothing to do with them being "uh sort of right or wrong bc they are uhh sort of liberal." Maybe no one else has noticed this, but I certainly have, if anyone wants an example, listen to a liberal guy named Sam Seder on YouTube, he perfectly illustrates what I mean.

While I'm not in the proximity of academia, I can imagine how this habit could become common in liberal arts classes where professors solicit varied opinions and interpretations.

Your example of the beheading is a little extreme and not good usage... unless the professor was intentionally aiming for humor through understatement and you missed the joke. Otherwise, a professor using "sort of", "kind of", "in a way", "I see your point, but... " or similar expressions to acknowledge that a student has a point but perhaps not the whole picture isn't unreasonable.

I suspect you'd find less of this in classes like physics.

TLDR: It isn't the worst habit if a discussion/conversation is intentionally open ended and seeking perspectives. I can see, though, once options are laid out and if the situation calls for decisiveness, it may come off a bit milquetoast-like if a person persists speaking this way.

Adults have a tendency to speak like children nowadays. It’s not just academics.

Bc they never want to be pinned down on a belief or ideology. Says “Sort of” keeps them wishie washie. Don’t have to be held accountable.

You sort of have a point, but lexical diversity is basically our strength.
