Man laid off from $150K white collar job at the end of last year. Wife works for LSU, possibly facing layoff. One kid in college on TOPS, another at Catholic HS paying full tuition. And they just bought a new house less than two years ago. Can anybody top that perfect storm?

Well, wife still has a job, he should be able to find something.
College kid can take out a loan or "work his way" through school.
Younger kid: public schools are out there.
House: sell it if too expensive.
Isn't this the advice all republicans say the poor should do?

He's got a lot of options and is in a temporary setback. There are a lot of worse situations out there.

Let me get this straight.
Family makes around 200k or more and dad loses job.
One kid is going to college on TOPS
One is in high school

If you have a job making 150k he probably has some skills which would get another decent job. Did he get his previous 150k job by winning a lucky scratch off? probably not

He wife works too, sounds like he didn't have a sound savings/investment plan. If you can't make it at least 6 months without working on cash reserves he was doing it wrong.
Two kids and a wife that works and was making $150k, hell there are families that have to live off of 1/3 or less of that a year.

Not saying they'll be out on the street or anything, and sure there are lots of people worse off. But it's a lot to be hit with in a short period of time. Significant lifestyle changes for all concerned. I guess I phrased it too dramatically.

He has experience and skills, sounds like his wife does too, unemployment will bring in some money and they will look for new work, relocation might be necessary. It's a big shock, but with the oil economy it's not uncommon. Buck up and and survive, the kids will be fine with out the privileged upbringing and it might teach them some life lessons.

No tears shed here. I make roughly the same give or take 10K depending on bonuses. Wife makes 50k'ish.I have 4 kids, two in private school, two in daycare(cost about as much as private school). I save a minimum of 10% per paycheck and chip in 10% into 401k or stock options. My wife saves 10% per paycheck also. BUT we live an extremely modest life. As in house note is 800+/- and no other debts.(paid cash for cars, camp, etc.) It could all come to a screeching halt and we could live jobless for at least two years with no worries without touching 401k. I drive up and down Hwy 90 in Laffy and see all these guys at the various oil industry shops with $60k, $70k, $80k pickup trucks or guys I know with 20k side by sides and they make less then me......doesn't make sense. Or buying a 250000k house and only paying a 3% down payment bc it clears out the savings/checking account.

My cousin, who i posted about minutes ago. Wife was part time at LSU and got laid off in August. He got laid off last week. They have 3 kids, oldest is in first grade at a catholic school.
Wife developed a strange neuro condition still being evaluated and they lose their insurance soon. Youngest kid also has some health issues. They've blown through deductible already this year only to have to do it again with new policy.
Oh, and his dad, my uncle got diagnosed with cancer early January.

Man I've endured some rough shite in my life to the point I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the sheer sadness of it all. I've been so broke before that I literally paid for gas in change just to get to a job interview. If this is the worst thing that befalls this guy then he is doing pretty damn good.
