Just bought a used vehicle last week and after 40 miles it's got a blown head gasket. Trying to figure out what my options are. The dealer had to have known about this issue

I hate getting calls like this. I usually refer them to the Lemon Law Lawyer. Google it.

If it wasn't under ant type of warranty, they aren't obligated to do anything.
Your best option might be to go and raise hell to the owner and you might split the cost with them.

I looked up the lemon law and it's saying it only applies to new cars

One document says I have essential warranty and gaskets are under essential. Another document says no warranty.

I'm pretty sure it's buyer beware when it comes to used cars. If it's a lot, you may have recourse, if it's private party you may out of luck.

Look at any contract and if it sold "AS is", you're screwed.

How used we talking? Year, Make, Model, Miles
Posted on 10/11/16 at 7:03 pm to LSUpetro1
I know, but I just wanted that guy to be the one to tell you

A head gasket isn't the worst thing that could happen. What is the year/make/model? It's possible to do in your driveway if you have some skills or at least a friend with the ability. Shop rate might not even be too offensive.
You're likely on your own anyway, so you may as well just fix the thing and move along.

Only poor people buy used

They can't tell when a head gasket is going to blow. They can go out at 50k miles or 500k or never go out.
It's a risk you take buying used Its not the most expensive fix

You should have received a copy of a Used Car Buyer's Guide when you purchased your vehicle. If the box is checked "As-Is", then you are on your own. If it's disclosed as a dealer limited warranty, CPO or balance of factory warranty, you may have some recourse enough for it to be fixed.

If you bought from a dealer without a warranty and as is, you have no recourse but that doesn't mean you can't go talk to the manager and state your case
