My ex wife and the mother of my daughter is in intensive care and conceivably could pass away. She put me as the emergency contact. She doesn't have any immediate family left to take care of things. So my question is what do I do if the hospital tells me she passed away. Basically what I'm asking is what is the least expensive way to handle it while maintaining some dignity. I'm thinking cremation and a small service in an extended family member's home. Does that sound correct?

That would work.

Some funeral homes offer facilities with minimal frills. But that would be more than a family member's home....with people bringing a dish.

I’m going through a divorce now and I’d let this count rot away in the hospital if that’s an option.

Cremation and small service is likely going to be your cheapest. And honestly, if she really doesn't have anyone left that makes a lot of sense.

Cremation is the cheapest option. You're a good man to take this on for an ex, you obviously loved/love her. Best of luck.

Note to self: re-evaluate who you put as emergency contact.

Not so much about the price.
Moreso about the spirit.

Cremation and small service is probably best bet. I know of someone who said they saved a good bit of money by asking the folks at the grocery store for a flower arraignment. It's a damn shame how much it now costs to die, I'd assume my family throw me in a hole if it were legal.

Contact several funeral homes now and talk prices. Specify no makeup, no viewing, no casket. And find a vase with a lid for the ashes (the ones some funeral homes have are awful looking and wretched expensive. )

Ask your daughter where she wants to scatter the ashes and scatter them.
