I have no clue how all of that works, but is that due to it being the new Earl K Long?
yes
i believe most of the other hospitals received anywhere between 45-55% of medicaid fees

No such thing as uninsured anymore. That was solved last year remember.
Quick antecdote; A patient was in my office yesterday asking me to help them find a hematologist that will accept uninsured patients. She needs regular transfusion b/c her bypass F'ed up her ability to absorp certain nutrients.
Me: Ma'am, I'll try and see if I can speak to the administrator at this phsycians office, but if it is there policy not to accept self-pay, there is very little I can do. In the event that I am unable to find you someone, have you looked into the exchange plans and the subsidies that may be available to you?
Her: That'a Obamacare. I would never do that. They have death panels. If I'm going to die, it's going to be on my own terms.
Me: Ma'am, didn't you just tell me you would get sick and likely die without these transfusions? And you may need insurance to get them.
Her: But those subsidies count as income, and I can't afford the taxes.
me: But you can afford the hospitalizations without insurance?
Her: I just can't do that Obamacare.
Me:

Yes, it was an incentive from the state so they would accomodate the EKL overflow to their ER.

Seems like MidCity missed the boat on that one

For those that don't know. The ER is going under because something less than 10% of the patients going there daily were actual emergent cases. People in the Hood figured out that if you go to the ER for a tummy ache or stubbed toe they can't turn you away and can't make you pay. So the Hospital has to eat those visits which results in giant losses and them closing. If people had personal responsibility (laugh along with me here) then the ER would be open. But remember, it's racism to even mention this.

You're right...saying that is racist. Because misuse of ER resources is not a black/white issue. Whitey is just as guilty, moreso in terms of total volume (but not per capita), as any other race.
To use the path of least resistance is human, and the ER is the path to "treatment" with the least front end resistance. You can thank tort lawyers and EMTALA for that.

Unfortunately this is largely the truth.
ETA: Not the racial stuff

If they (politicans) want the Obamacare to work, then they need to do like some foreign contries do. Make pts put down a credit card or an insurance card before the ER will see them. We already have a mechanism in place that is suppose to allow everyone to access health insurance (even though I do not like it), but it is cheaper and easier for them not to buy it. We need to close that loop hole. No pay, no play

All state hos should have been sold to for-profits years ago. They know how to run a hospital and keep standards high (because they have to). The state would not be losing money and the local gov would have property tax revenue. I remember when HCA sold North Monroe to St Francis. All the local politicians were jumping for joy like they killed an evil giant. 8 months later they find out they no longer got the 1 million in property taxes and the same politicians were screaming. Idiots.

BR General isn't a state hospital.

So it's definitely going down, huh? I figured that the State would step in with some recently found money to keep them open for at least another couple of months.
Found money from where? We gave it to Hollywood, Justin Beiber, IBM, and a bunch of other crony capitalists.
The state's finances are a wreck right now.

From my understanding, most people aren't being laid off, but instead offered positions in other parts of the hospital.
It's the employees' choice whether or not they remain with the General, but there won't be any sort of severance if they turn down the new job and leave.
In other words, most employees will be able to retain a job with the general, but they might not like the new position offered.
*I know this applies to nurses, but not sure about techs and other ER employees.

If people would fricking pay their bills, have proper insurance or actually use the ER correctly, we wouldn't be in this mess
