$180,000 in Manhattan = $73,658 in Baton Rouge

Seems Reasonable.

If you get with the right Big Law firm, they will pay the same salary in less costlier locales.

It is why some people wanted to get into big firms in places like Houston. NYC pay scale with lower cost of living.

I always wondered how ya'll felt about that. I imagine the upside though is much higher once you become somebody at the firm.

80 hours a week X 50 weeks = 4000 hrs. per year

$180k ÷ 4000 hrs. = $45 per hour

Your average street walker makes more than that. AND performs a better service.

As of July 1, new first-year lawyers at the firm will now get $180,000, up from its longtime standard of $160,000 for law-school graduates, according to a Cravath memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Lol nah. No amount of money you could pay me to take that job.

its like tech and the bay area. It pisses them off so much that someone living in austin/denver/chicago makes within 10-15% of what they do.

Ya, that number is off.

I'd also say that there aren't many people making top 5% incomes in this country working 40 hours a week.

These firms aren't paying 180k for slip and falls, is what it seemed you were implying.

I don't know of too many people that pay it much mind to be honest.

That's not balling in NY. Probably just exiting the cusp of needing to have a roommate to have an okay place in Manhattan with a reasonable commute.

This board thinks it is 70k in Br

Let's break it down

10k a month after healthcare, taxes, and 401k

You get an awesome 1 bedroom in a great location for 3k

Car payment which I wouldn't have but whatever 500

Car insurance 100

Cable 150

Utilities 200

Cell phone 100

Groceries 400

That leaves you 5,500 a moth leftover. Which would be your total take home pay on 70k in Br

As I've grown older the difference between the lifestyle of someone making 170k and 100k isn't that far off. The difference is the amount of savings that higher earner has, and the opportunities to generate other income streams, which will pay off handsomely as time goes on.

This assumes one or the other isn't an extreme spender or saver.
