Have any of you had success buying not necessarily cheap, but reasonable, Christmas /NYE flights last minute. I'm going to visit my family in Cenla for Xmas, but want to take a vacation (literally anywhere) for NYE and can depart from Houston, Dallas or NOLA. With early January I'm wondering if I would have any luck whatsoever with this idea.

Maybe an international with Allegiant from Dallas or something. I just haven't traveled (read: been OT poor) enough to know if there will literally be zero last minute deals on the 25/26 Dec and returning right after the 1st.

Unless you fly ON Christmas Day, prepare thy anus has been the general rule for air travel pricing in the Holiday period. It calms down by early January.

ETA: Let us be clear: Pricing calms down by early January.
I have no idea nor do I care whether your anus calms down by then.

Spirit airlines is the only thing that won't break the bank, and that was still 180 for a round trip from Nola to Chicago for Xmas

I'm flying form NOLA to NYC Christmas Day and coming back New Year's Day. Round trip ticket was $290. Booked a few weeks ago though. I know the price has been creeping up.

Also, coming home any sooner would have been much more expensive.

The week between Christmas and New Years is probably the most expensive time of the year to fly unless you can swing flying on the actual holidays

Look now if you're trying to go anywhere. I really haven't seen too many good deals for christmas/new years at all this season, especially since American and US just merged.

Options:

1. If you have miles take a look at redeeming some for a free one way ticket then buying a one-way ticket back. I'm flying BTR- Philly the saturday before christmas and returning the wednesday before new years with only using 25k miles on AA.

2. Try flying back on Jan 1st. The way the calendar falls this year christmas and new years day are on fridays, meaning everyone is trying to fly back saturday jan 2 or sunday jan 3.

After my post above, I took a look around and am actually seeing some decent options.

If you're willing to leave on christmas eve instead of christmas day, MSY-SFB (Orlando) on Allegiant Thurs Dec 24- Sun Jan 3 $137.

Chicago is $107 Fri Dec 25- Fri Jan 1 or $142 Dec 25- Sat Jan 2 on Spirit

New York City $231 Fri Dec 25- Sat Jan 2 on Delta
