Shouldn't heads roll for this?

I mean, I'm sure someone was aware that this dam had underlying weaknesses before the rains hit.

Doesn't this just to speak to the overall neglect given to our infrastructure?

The spillway failure could be due to a lack of inspection and preventive maintenance.

It seems to me that the emergency spillway should have been built with some type of concrete apron to prevent scour occurring right at the dam(n) wall. It wouldn't have had to extend as far as the original spillway.

Hey... at least we are getting a high-speed rail that nobody will ride and takes you to the middle of nowhere. And it significantly over budget already.

My state sucks...

my guess is that California has been marred with such a long drought, the last thing inspectors would think would happen is the auxiliary spillway would fail, or even be challenged.
They probably didn't think the water levels would ever get back up to that point. More than likely half assed their routine inspections.

the auxiliary spillway

they've reportedly never used it before, never had to

sheriff just said that's it's down to just 2" over the aux spillway, and the kicker - the state has NEVER done a study in which the aux spillway might fail

At least the dam itself appears to be secure

A dam shame it's dark so we can't see what happens when this pops off.

What does this mean?

2 inches coming over the top of spillway,,

assumption is the pressure decreases on the earthenworks as the waterflow decreases

but the damage may already be done,,just time as the earth give away

it was like 1' over a couple hours ago

down to just a couple inches means the pressure is subsiding, and they may have dodged a bullet

they're going to try and helicopter in boulders, gravel rock and debris in the coming hours to try and shore up the area where it's failing

How much worse will the spillway damage get with the continued release?

At 100k cubic feet per second that's roughly 1/6 the flow of the Mississippi River. Hell of a lot of water going somewhere really fast.

the erosion has weakened the earthen dam, a slow leak,, steady stream could cause a collapse,, the gravel and stone Stu talked about it mean to recompress the weakened earth,, but the risk is more top soil slipping

also the concerns would be coming rains causing more errosion leading to collapse

I got the idea that the failure was occurring (if looking upstream from below the auxiliary structure) to the left of the auxiliary structure there is an earthen embankment and parking lot area and they were concerned it was going to cut through the earthen embankment around the end of the structure and then would erode out about 30 vertical feet down and bypass and undercut the structure causing it to fail.
