There's a shuttle bus from LGA to Grand Central Terminal for about $12. Subway to destination is $2.25, I think. If a cab is really only $30 to 87th & Broadway, I'd probably go that route (especially if you have a lot of luggage, a woman and/or children.)

I frequently take the train from JFK to Rye. It's only about $15 (off-peak), but takes at least 1-3/4 hrs if I hit every connection perfectly. Usually about 2 or 2-1/4 hrs. Car service is $125 (I think. My sister pays that bill.)

I've been to NYC several times. Once you're settled in, public transportation is awesome, but LaGuardia isn't on the subway line. Taking a cab isn't the cheapest option, but when dealing with bags and having to transfer from a bus, it's just far easier and saves a lot of time to just suck it up and pay.

Then use the subway/buses/walk the rest of your trip until it's time to get back to the airport.

Take a taxi.

Or if you're really adventurous, there's a bus that runs that route- it's $2.25 a ride. Look for the M60 bus out of LaGuardia. It will drop you as far west as 106th and Amsterdam in Manhattan. That's West Harlem BTW, near Columbia.

From there you should be able to take the 1 train south to 78th ish street.

take the m60 bus to broadway then the 1 train. free transfers I think.

or take an uber. probably like $35

bus and subway is the cheapest.

if you want to know how to get around without someone who is from there, use google maps. change the designation at the top from driving to public transit and it will show you the closest subway/bus stations and what trains you need to take/transfer to.

M60 to the 1 at Columbia. Take the 1 to 79. Walk from there. Should take an hour and a half.

I love the M60 bus. We took it last time we went and it wasn't bad at all. Went to like 125th then got off and took the subway into the city
