A Lafayette Parish grand jury on Wednesday indicted Lafayette City Marshal Brian Pope on felony counts of perjury and using public funds to influence voters, charges that stem from his refusal to honor a public records request and the civil lawsuit that followed.
quote:
The two perjury counts arise from sworn testimony Pope made in a lawsuit filed against him by the alternative weekly newspaper, The Independent, for refusing to provide public records.
The news organization sought emails to and from Pope's official account to document that he had planned an October news conference in an attempt to influence the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's election.

i imagine if you looked into most elections in south LA, you'd find similar issues
if this is true, it may violate a federal law. i can't remember which one. maybe the Hatch Act

Then let's start doing it. Time to start holding people accountable.

oh i agree. so many people hold public office (even small ones) and treat it like some super-powerful fiefdom

You can't because the people who are in charge of holding people accountable are in the back pockets of those they need to hold accountable.

It was only a matter of time.

this whole saga really hit Pope hard
remember, he was already sentenced to jail and had to pay like $100k in legal fees for the original lawsuit

Yeah, that needs to be cut back as well. Here in St Louis, there are like 24 wards within the city, and like 96 municipalities within the county. It's entirely too much. It stops an regional progress from happening and hold the city/county/region back.

It is absurd. This is a classic Louisiana example of being a "king maker".

you can start even bigger here. hell in LA, we have WAY too many parishes for our population

So you expect politicians to hold other politicians accountable....in Louisiana???...

This perfectly describes 95% of the sheriffs, mayors, and parish presidents in the state.

No. The people and the local media need to hold them accountable.

Glorified dog catcher was batting way out of his league. If he doesn't stop using public funds for his defense, he may see a recall effort against him.

The people
I have almost as little faith in "The people" as I do most politicians....I guess I'm pretty cynical though.

Interesting thought here. Let's take for example something relatively minor and a guy that has a relatively low amount of power....namely the ULL baseball stadium expansion delays and the athletics director of ULL. The local media tried to hold ULL accountable here but the machine quickly activated and got that radio host suspended for damn near two weeks. Keep in mind this host pretty much turned that particular station into the leading sports talk station in Acadiana (I know not a huge deal but big for that guy I'd think).
Again, that is probably somewhat of a stretch to relate to politics but similar to what I think would happen if the local media starts to call out local politicians...also look at what happened to Chris Nakamoto in the BR area....I'm surprised he isn't buried under the jail right now

And the sheriff of Iberia Parish cannot legally carry a gun. Embarrassing.
FYI, it's marshal with one "l" in the title.
