1) Are you seeing the Red Cross out there busting their asses? Just curious if that's the best place to help with monetary assistance right now.

2) When the water recedes, let us know if there are supplies you folks need right away that may be in short supply there? I'm sure our church is going to send a truck over there.

Stay safe.

Try to stick to local charities.

National charities like Red Cross are almost a scam as far as I'm concerned.

1) I'm not directly in the heavily-affected area, but I've mostly seen the local churches doing most of the work. Come to think of it, I haven't heard of the Red Cross, yet. That's weird.

2) Thousands of people are going to need clothes and anything you can donate to help them return to normal. Water and basic food will be covered by the government and National Guard.

Red Cross reps were at my parents house while their home was burning to the ground 8 years ago. Gave my dad a $500 Visa gift card that night so they could use that to buy some basic stuff and get a hotel for the night.

So they are alright in my book.

This.

If your church is sending a truck of supplies, donate to them, not to the RC. I've had bad experience with the RC, so I guess I'm biased.

Find local charities to donate too. Red Cross is a waste of money as only a small fraction of the money will go to victims here.

Volunteers with boats, local churches and the fire Dept (as a staging area) is who helped my family today.

Awfully generous of you gator . As a side note, if anyone needs anything in BR please let me know (shower, place to sleep, bottles of water, etc.). Midcity was spared from this flooding for the most part and I'd be more than willing to help anyone in need. I feel pretty helpless just sitting at home doing nothing so would like to help out if anyone needs anything tonight, tomorrow or monday

Hopefully someone here can start listing some places that will use all the donations to those in need in THAT area.

That would be great. I would have a tough time determining what a good local charity is there.

Is that a serious question?

Of course I can't. I didn't really mean this to be a joke thread. ETA: OK, I saw the thread this references.

I'm going to take the suggestions to church tomorrow for real help and not just what we Floridians think ya'll need. I don't want folks sending socks if ya'll don't want socks.

Where is the best place to donate clothes? I just cleaned out my closet and have a stack I hadn't taken to goodwill yet. There is a Red Cross across the street from work, but not sure if they accept donations there.

Text FLOOD to 12345 and you'll donate $50 to the Red Cross in 30 days through your phone bill and the Red Cross will send $2 to Louisiana after they take money out for their expenses.

very nice gesture there, man...in my experience, your best bet is to wait a day or so to see how this thing plays out, as you can't provide emergency relief until it is safe to do so and we just don't know what the locals will need longer term.
