Caught by the millions off the Louisiana coast each year, menhaden are processed into fertilizer, animal feed and health supplements. More pounds of menhaden are netted each year in the state’s waters than the combined hauls of the state’s better-known fisheries, including shrimp, crab, oysters and crawfish.

Rep. Beryl Amedée, R-Houma, rejected the idea that Louisiana fishery rules should follow the lead of other states. Texas has menhaden catch limits and near-coast exclusion zones, Alabama and Mississippi have exclusion zones, and Florida prohibits all large-net fishing in its waters. East Coast states also have menhaden catch limits and other restrictions.

The restrictions in other states are not necessary in Louisiana because our coast is different; we have a working coast,” Amedée said.

House Bill 1033 would cap the menhaden catch in Louisiana waters at 573 million pounds per year and require menhaden fishing vessels to report daily locations and catch amounts to the state.

The menhaden industry has avoided regulation in Louisiana while other Gulf of Mexico states have tightened rules, enacting catch limits and fishing exclusion zones to protect the many species that depend on the pencil-length fish for food.

What's more, menhaden nets snag more than menhaden. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has received an increasing number of complaints about menhaden bycatch and the trails of dead redfish and trout left in the wakes of menhaden ships, which sometimes come within a few hundred yards of the shore.

“With this indiscriminate type of take, everything is affected,” Orgeron said.

exactly. We're the only state who doesn't put some type of restrictions on these fricking cocksuckers. we have the whole fleet of boats from every state pillaging our waters and some POS like Amedee thinks its all good. I really hope something bad happens to him.

yep, just one more reason Louisiana sucks and will never climb out of the sewer. Even when it makes perfectly good sense to do something, the local legislator with his hand out will frick over the citizens.

Then he'll get reelected, cause hes "one of us". frick this state and every fricking person in office or who has ever held office.

and with that chart posted above, is why their lobby is so strong.

This bill is a start but its really just a PR move. 1/2 a mile is a joke. Every other coastal state has a 3 to 5 mile buffer.

Like anything when it comes to politics, especially here.. My first question is.. Who has what to gain financially by killing this bill?

the Pogie industry- purse seiners, processors, and support industries along with the politicians who get paid by the Menhaden lobby.

The state would gain more money if they took steps to enhance the sport fishing which is what this bill intends to do. But don't expect it to happen when people like Amedee are willing to wheel and deal to kill it so they can get the big campaign contribution from the commercial fishing lobby.

Another check in the Con column never to simply vote straight ticket. Local politics and real issues get lost when we all do it.

Thinking the term “RINO” means anything in discussing Louisiana politics/politicians and thinking this slimy cocksucker’s motivation has anything to do with a principled stand for “LESS government regulation” are about equally on par here.
