Throw me somethin’ mister, has long been a Carnival-time mantra in New Orleans, as parade-goers vie for glinting plastic necklaces tossed from passing floats. But in recent years there’s also been increasing discontent with the enormous amount of plastic thrown from Mardi Gras parades and its ecological effect.

On Tuesday morning, the 13-year-old Krewe of Freret unveiled a strategy to reduce the bead deluge.

Starting in 2025, riders in the Freret parade will no longer be permitted to throw plastic beads. Krewe leaders estimate the change will eliminate more than 200,000 strands of beads from New Orleans' trees, storm drains and, ultimately, landfills each year, or 2 million strands over the next decade.

In addition to the beads, the plan will eliminate thousands of single-use plastic bags that wrap the beads from what the krewe calls “the vulnerable New Orleans ecosystem.”

Are these Mardi Gras beads or other types of beads too?

Asking for a friend from College Station.

Throw chickens instead. They are biodegradable.

In other news, the Krewe of Thugs will continue to throw lead year-round.

Arky folks would be very intrigued by this statement.

I ride in Endymion, other than the specialty beads I got with my krewe package, I didn't buy any. People don't give a shite about plain beads anymore.

And so it begins... The progressive trend will kick in and we will all have to spend double on throws. Make them economical and I am all for it

People got real creative this year in their throws. I saw pot holders, packaged jambalaya mix, dish towels. Would much prefer that useful shite than beads that I end up throwing away.

Only the beads? I think they should go all the way and ban any and all plastics from their krewe. You know, for the environment.

Eh, someone threw a baby pig this year, and people are all up in arms about it. I'd love a little cochon being tossed at me.

It's easy to poke fun, but when you see how much of that shite gets pulled from the storm drains, this is a good idea.

I hate that it's woke, but I do think it would make for more creative throws and a better parade-going experience.
