Munich is expensive. It's a city that is awesome in the summer. But if you just passing through the country Koln is just fine.

If you have the opportunity to hit Munich, I'd do that. One of my favorite cities, especially as a jumping off point...so much to do in that area.

If you make that call, I've got tons of advice...including drink as much Augustiner as you can, which I think SCH would approve of...

Heh, Maastricht! Our daughter will be teaching at the university there next semester. We want to go visit her probably in April. I was figuring on a side trip to Koln. But if Maastricht has the goods we can just stay there

Depending on your available time go see the Dom and Aachen is nice, of course you're close to Bastogne and a nice easy drive to Luxembourg for Patton's grave. Maastricht is a very nice city, you will love it, I would stay in Maastricht and day trip to Koln and Dussledorf etc. In Maastrich there is a nice quiet Irish bar with pretty decent food at the end of the walking bridge directly across from the brewery. Lots of blonde blued eyed pretty ladies. Enjoy!

The thing is our time is limited and Munich is a good bit further from our final destination, Amsterdam which is where we fly out of.

I just got back from Koln about a month ago. Nice city. Definitely go visit the Cathedral. its MASSIVE and very impressive inside and out. Within blocks of there are a number of good local pubs serving kolsch style beer. very tasty.

I was there on business as my company is based in Bonn. But did spend a nice sunday afternoon doing the above with a couple of colleagues/friends.

Augsburg
Not near Koln or Düsseldorf but a cool old town which should be visited if you are in the area. Between Stuttgart & Munich.

You flying in and out of Amsterdam? Since I am one old goat not into the partying scene I would assume Amsterdam would be the place to be.

Yea that's how I remember it. That hike to the top was a real joy. Good beer everywhere but the place we ate at right near the cathedral the waiter was a cock sucker.

Resident Amsterdammer here:

If you want straight-up club, best bets are Sugar Factory, or maybe Melkweg in Leidseplein (big nightlife hub).

For more unique, but cool bars, I would say check out Hannekes Boom, Roest or Pacific Parc.

Also if you can manage a more alternative crowd, OT301 and Vranrijk are good "squat" bars that offer a more anything goes ambience with cheap beers.

Batavia and Hill Street Booze are good warm-up places near the RLD, that allow weed-smoking inside.

Best coffeeshops are 1e Hulp, Boerejongens, Voyagers, Katsu, De Graal, Club Media, Paradox, 2e Kamer, Original Dampkring and Bluebird!

ETA: also make sure to rent a bike, or better yet go to the Spui area, around midnight onwards, and there will be several unsavory characters peddling stolen bikes for 15-30 euros a pop. Make sure you buy a nice lock beforehand though, because the picked one does not come free with purchase

Enjoy

Fruh am Dom is the best kolsch as well.

Munich is nice, but it is very expensive they have a lot of cool things to do if your looking to party hit the Kultfabrik they have a bunch of clubs and bars to hit up, They also have the Chriskindlesmart going on all over it is a pretty cool thing to check out. I would recommend that if you are in Munich spend a little more time driving south in the Mountains and hit up Salzburg it is a cool little city or Innsbruck is pretty good too. They have a bunch of little resort towns down on the border between Germany and Austria.
