To actually escalate into an all out nuclear war?

Was it Kennedy because he blockaded the island and didn't allow anymore Russian vessels in there?

Or was it Khrushchev who finally backed down for lack of a better term and negotiated with us for us to get out bombs out of turkey and Italy?

Or do you think it was a little of both?

Im currently listening to Dan Carlin's podcast on this subject right now. Give it a listen if you are interested: LINK

I dont think either man wanted war but Kennedy was prepared to strike cuba if an agreement was not reached. So I kinda leans towards Krushchev but both men were working against hardliners and both men stopped what could've been WWIII from happening.

Khrushchev backing down prevented war, but he didn't have much choice. Given the state of nuclear delivery systems at the time, the US would have likely emerged the "victor" in an atomic exchange (although western Europe would have been obliterated). It wasn't until the widespread deployment of ICBMs a few years later that the Soviets possessed the guaranteed means to destroy the United States.

Thing about it though, we likely would've invaded Cuba, the Russians had tactical nukes already there and ready to deploy on our troops when they landed ashore. Would've been insanely bloody for us.

Uh, no

Russia was not going to get Moscow, Kiev and Leningrad as well as having the bulk of their Navy obliterated over Cuba. The missile crisis was just a bargaining chip they skillfully played to get us to pull our missiles out of Europe.

The cult of personality surrounding JFK paints him as staring down the Ruskies and calling their bluff. In actuality, they pretty much played him. They got our missiles away from the Motherland and kept a Communist regime 90 miles from the USA. They were probably flabbergasted that JFK didn't invade anyway and toss Castro out.

So the Russians didn't have nukes in Cuba and just duped us to get our nukes out of Europe?

Russia already had nuclear strike subs up and down the eastern seaboard plus ICBMs aimed at us. They didn't need Cuba to threaten us with a first strike. Kennedy got played and gained no advantage when it was over.
