Does a negative test guarantee that she doesn't have the virus and won't develop the symptoms within the 21 day period?
No. But she is not contagious unless she is symptomatic and exchanges bodily fluids with someone.
The public fear is out of control. Thomas Eric Duncan was showing symptoms in a small apartment for 1-2 days with 4 other people who did not catch anything from him. The paramedics who transported him to the hospital didn't catch anything. The healthcare workers treating him at his worst (bleeding, uncontrollable diarrhea and projectile vomiting) were wearing sub-standard gear for 2-3 days and only 2 of them (Pham & Vinson) were infected. The possibility of anyone catching anything from Hickox is very remote. Sure she can still develop symptoms and become contagious for the 21 day period, but even with a slight fever (which she doesn't have) she isn't really contagious.
this was linked ealier in the the thread and everyone should read it.
Ebola and Quarantine - New England Journal of Medicine

You're showing your ignorance. There are little to or no direct flights to America from the African countries with Ebola outbreaks
And? Regardless of where they catch their connecting flight, their passport either originates from the impacted country or they have a stamp in their passport that indicates travel to or from that country. That can be used to quarantine upon arrival if needed.

People are quick to jump on Governor Christie about his quarantine enforcement, but seem to forget that Governor Cuomo from NY shared the same stance.
If Hickox had landed at LaGuardia or JFK, she would have still been quarantined.
If it were Bunkie, La I wouldn't be as concerned. Having this smug bitch traveling around NYC in a tightly packed subway etc. is worrisome.
I realize based on Duncan's family not getting it the transmission isn't as easy as I initially feared. It's just her frick you you can't stop me attitude that irks me.

Well, she's not contagious, so that concern is based on ignorance, not facts.

I know, right? How dare someone resent being locked up for 3 weeks against their will with no cause.

I don't know much about this story, can someone explain what the difference is between her and all the healthcare workers who treated the Dallas Ebola patient?
Hickox went to Africa and treated ebola. Came home and was screened at the airport. A forehead scanner said she had a temp of 101 (that is concerning) and she was detained until she could be transported by ambulance to a hospital in NJ. When she got there, they took her temp with an oral thermomenter multiple times and it was 98.6. The hospital docs said she was ok and showed no signs of ebola, but she was held in quaratine against her will for several days anyway. No warrant, no trial, nothing that even halfway resembles due process.
The healthcare workers in Dallas are being told to monitor their health conditions and were given 3 weeks off from work. The hosital also is offering them places to stay if they don't want to put their families at risk. There hasn't been any mandatory quarantines (that I have haeard of) in Texas that is the difference.

She is just about the worst possible advocate they could have hoped for.

What cause? All the ppl that don't get a flu shot pose more threat than an asymptomatic ebola caregiver does. Read the NEJM article.

Problem will be solved soon. They won't have to go to Africa to work with Ebola patients. Looks as if pres is bringing them here.

As previously stated, if they were in fact infected, you would have to quarantine any and everybody on their connecting flight(s), otherwise newly infected people would just be walking around with no problems and coming into contact with more people. You and people like you use shitty logic.
This is one of the few things that I actually agree with how the administration is handling it.

If she's Ebola free, why is she being quarantined?

She's tested negative at least 3 times. Science should always take precedence over unfounded rumors/fears.
Also ebola is a huge problem in 3 West African countries. Zimbabwe is a country in Southeast Africa.
