Just got back from Thailand.
They definitely believe lighter skin is better. Saw a few makeup ads with the word "white" used predominantly.
It's analogous of "redneck" here. Ie dark skin means you work outside in the fields, light skin means you are successful and make a lot of money. Same thing in Cambodia.

When ever I read the name of a country like Thailand I enunciate Thailand, impersonating the announcer from Street Fighter. Anyone else do this?

In S.E. Asia, everyone is obsessed with white skin. They even sell lotion to bleach your skin, just like we sell tanning lotion here.

Ya we saw the skin stuff too.
My wife doesn't do the tanning thing so the women there were all about her.
Speaking of the tanning thing, on our way out through Phuket airport we saw some hilariously tanned people flying out.
One family of 4 looked like a cartoon they were so dark. Basically looked like they were wearing black face. No way they don't all get cancer.

It's the same reason why there was racism amongst the African-Americans back in the day. A light skinned black man/woman was considered upper class because they had an inside job, whereas a darker black individual was scum because they worked outside in the fields all day.

who are we to judge their culture?
If an African beauty magazine ad was touting its latest line of 'lip plates' we would be told that this is their concept of beauty and that we have to accept it as part of the goodness of diversity.
Why are we told the opposite when the Thai culture's idea of beauty is being white?
