My buddy went AOL and walked home two miles from school the first day of kindergarten. His mom got pissed at him and brought him back to school. He got punished at school too. I can just imagine this scenario playing out in today's world.

I believe the age of the kid is crucial in this. If the kd is aged 8 or younger. I can understand the outrage. But when I was about 9 or 10. I would go plenty of places by myself. I walked home from school or church sometimes. Id go to the store to get some candy for myself. Id go to my then girlfriend house so we could jump on the trampoline and kiss like the grownups. 
As long as I was home before street lights my parents did not care. I guess they should be given the death penalty huh.
