Judge denies request to prevent city of New Orleans from taking down Beauregard monument
just now
NEW ORLEANS - Judge Kern Reese has denied a request for an injunction to prevent the city of New Orleans from taking down the P.G.T. Beauregard statue at the entrance to City Park.
A citizen had filed suit earlier this week, contending that the City Park board and not the city of New Orleans owned the statue and the land upon which it sits.
The judge had denied an earlier temporary restraining order request, but did hold a hearing Wednesday, at which time the request for an injunction was denied.
Beauregard is one of 3 Confederate-era statues still slated to be taken down by the City of New Orleans.
A bill in the state legislature to prevent removal of the monuments is still awaiting a house debate.

I suspect Landry will file suit now representing the state.

They are coming down it appears...all of them. Mitch got his way again and New Orleans (without the consent of it's citizens) will lose some of it's history and heritage.
This city gives me new reasons to hate it every day.

You can dislike the ruling, but not sure what the "Judge" Reese is about. The guy is probably one of the most fair over there, and he's no fan of Mitch. He's the one who held him in contempt and was threatening to jail him over the firefighters' case a few years back.

quote:It is not a fair ruling. the "Jude" knows there is a bill in congress about the statures...... IF he was fair he would suspend any removal efforts and allow Congress to decide.

Someone probably didn't care much for where someone else got their shoes.

Why would you hate the whole city over this? You point out yourself that the city's citizens didn't consent.
I hear people saying they will boycott the city over the monuments issue. I don't understand the thought process behind that. First of all, half of them probably don't go to the city that much anyway. Additionally, why try to intentionally hurt businesses which do not support the issue?
