Have dealt with many. But they're usually straight up when talking about getting OCS slots.

Nah. I'm out.

Reserves is the same deal. Depends on your degree. Know one girl she joined as an SK, graduated with a nursing degree, and then became an officer.

and as an officer in the reserves are more likely to get activated than enlisted from what I was told. more IA slots to fill in admin and what not I guess.

on a related note, 6600 Chiefs (included Senior and Master) with 20 or more years are being forced into retirement this year. usually means the ranks are swelling or budget cuts. i'd go with the latter.

Curious. Someone at work mentioned that if you want to get a graduate degree in a position of need, the military will pay you to do it as part of the recruitment and job positions. How does that work?

Navy has some good tech jobs. But, I'd join the Airforce. When I was trying to decide which branch to join, every marine, army, or navy guy told me to join the AF, so that's what I did. It's just a better life.

If you had a son with a degree trying to join the Navy or Army, which branch would you prefer?

The Army and Navy are undergoing historic cuts right now, so, this is a tough time to decide on joining the military.

I'd say take a look at all of the armed services. If only one offers OCS go that route. If two or more offer OCS, that's great!

It is a possibility, however, that his only option will be to enlist, because of the draw-down in force size. I say, "so what"?, because, a person can have a fantastic career in the enlisted ranks. In some ways, being enlisted is better than being an officer.

Navy. Better opportunities.

Outside of some specialties like nuke and combat arms, all four branches have mostly the same jobs. Admin, cooks, intel, commo, mechanics, medics, etc... A lot of them even attend the same schools. Air Force tacsat (tactical satellite) operators go to the Army Signal Center for training, Navy intel goes to Fort Huachuca for theirs. I'm sure there are jobs that the Army goes to the AF or Navy for training. 'Better opportunities' have more to do with your MOS than your branch IMO. Loading bombs or driving a tank are both going to apply to civilian jobs about the same.

When deciding between the Navy and Army, unless I wanted something branch specific like nuke or Ranger, my main consideration would be deployment life. Would I rather be confined to a sardine can, hot-cotting with two other dudes, or would I rather sleep on the ground in some hell hole, eating MRE's and dodging incoming? Granted, plenty of people manage to dodge both scenarios, but it's about choosing the suck that's right for you.

Tell him to get a real job

Below is a transcript of John Glenn’s ending rebuttal statement delivered during a
debate with Howard Metzenbaum that took place at the Cleveland City Club on May 4th,
1974. At the time of the debate Glenn and Metzenbaum were running against each other
in the Ohio Democratic Primary for U.S. Senator. In a speech given a few weeks prior to
the debate Metzenbaum stated that Glenn had never held a real job.

Senator Glenn: “Howard, I can’t believe you said I have never held a job.
"I served twenty-three years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through
two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on twelve different
occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook; it was my life on the
line. It was not a nine-to-five job where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to
the bank.
“I ask you to go with me, as I went the other day, to a Veterans Hospital and look
those men, with their mangled bodies, in the eye and tell them they didn't hold a job.
You go with me to any gold-star mother and you look her in the eye and tell her that her
son did not hold a job.
“You go with me to the space program, and go as I have gone to the widows and
orphans of Ed White and Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, and you look those kids in the
eye and tell them that their Dad didn't hold a job.
“You go with me on Memorial Day coming up and you stand in Arlington
National Cemetery, where I have more friends than I'd like to remember, and you watch
those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that
those people didn't have a job.
“I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of
your life thanking God that there were some men – some men - who held a job. And they
required a dedication to purpose and a love of country and a dedication to duty that was
more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what made this country
possible.
“I have held a job, Howard!”
